Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, and the other in Manhattan. The Fieldston Middle campus located in Riverdale is comprised of approximately 400 students in Grades 6-8th.

We are looking for passionate educators to join our community who are committed to progressive education, who consider ethics to be at the core of their work with students and colleagues, and who will contribute to the academic success of all of our students. Currently, we have a position for a full-time middle school science teacher.
The ideal candidate has knowledge and experience teaching life science, biology and/or environmental sciences from an inquiry-based, progressive approach and is open to their own continued professional growth, understands how to receive critical feedback and understands how to instruct students with a growth mindset.
Responsibilities include teaching a course load of 4 sections; serving as an advisor to a group of 10-14 students; working as a member of a grade-level interdisciplinary team; attending faculty meetings; and other shared middle school responsibilities.
Ideal candidates have experience employing a range of pedagogical approaches and will be excited by the opportunity to teach a diverse student body in a values-based community. The ideal candidate has also demonstrated a commitment to addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside the classroom. A passion for working with middle school students, a flexible attitude, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a sense of humor are essential.
Bachelor’s degree is required; with a concentration in biology, environmental, ecology or life sciences. Masters preferred.
A minimum of 5 years of relevant, lab-based, successful middle school classroom teaching experience is a must.
Proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and manage materials in a lab-based classroom
Proven ability to develop and implement an inquiry-based, hands-on experiential learning experiences for students; knowledge of the NSTA science standards is preferred.
Knowledge and understanding of lab safety skills and requirements for implementation
Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills
An understanding and commitment to cultural competency and how to support a diverse student population
Understanding of and desire to work with middle school-aged students
Proficient with technology, including the use of Smartboards and Google apps.
