Involves providing individualized services to students who are underrepresented, low income, first generation college students, and / or otherwise at a higher risk of experiencing academic difficulty, to help students succeed. Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success. Includes specializations in particular underrepresented groups, particular academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs), or success in particular academic programs.
Under the general direction of the COSMOS director, the COSMOS Teacher Fellow is responsible for supporting the academic instructors of the COSMOS program on the UCSC campus and assist in the development and direction of the program as well as activities in the area of student learning skills assistance. Teacher Fellows act as the bridge between the academic and residential components of the COSMOS program.
Core responsibilities include attending and supporting classroom and lab time; attending, supporting and occasionally coordinating logistics for field trips; meeting with students, other instructors and teacher fellows; attending discovery lectures; transferring necessary information regarding students to residential staff; teaching transferable skills regularly (either daily or several times weekly) to help students understand the cluster curriculum, gain skills in research and presenting and better prepare themselves for higher level science education and careers going forward.

The EPC provides support to faculty, staff, and outreach groups to work collaboratively with schools, community colleges, and universities to promote educational pathways to success for all students.
This position works with The California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) program which is housed within the EPC. COSMOS is a 4-week academic, residential summer program for students interested in STEM subjects and careers. It takes place at 4 different UC campuses across the state of California and is going into its 21st summer.
