Overview of the Position
Reporting to the Lower School Director, the school seeks vibrant teachers who bring creativity and innovation to their teaching practice. This person will join a growth-oriented and collaborative learning community committed to the school’s mission and core values. Class size is between 16-18 students, and there is a part time Assistant Teacher supporting the class. The hiring process will include a screening interview with two administrators, with finalists returning for a second round demonstration lesson and interview with the full hiring committee.
In the Lower School self-contained classroom the lead teacher is responsible for:
All aspects of the academic curriculum including social-emotional learning, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Conducting ongoing formative student assessment to guide and plan for differentiated instruction so that a wide range of students reach their full potential.
Collaborating consistently with the grade level partner teacher and assistant teacher to ensure as much program cohesiveness and continuity as possible.
Communicating proactively and routinely to parents/guardians in a supportive manner: writing newsletters, conferencing with families twice yearly as well as when additional needs arise and writing progress reports each semester.
Teaming with administrators, learning specialists, and specialist teachers to support students throughout the day.
Managing classroom budget for supplies, equipment and books to stay within allotted budget.
Ensuring the safety of each student by supervising and engaging with students during daily recesses and scheduled lunch duties.
Supporting the professional growth of the assistant teachers with clear expectations, opportunities for demonstrations and constructive feedback.
The ideal candidate will:
Have at a minimum three to five years of exemplary lead classroom teaching experience and a valid California Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential.
Be well-versed in progressive educational theory and practices and be culturally competent to build an inclusive community.
Have a proven track record of working successfully in a diverse student environment that upholds high values in social justice education and practices.
Possess a working understanding of developmental/constructivist teaching practices and social-emotional learning.
Have a nurturing, supportive, and clear tone with students, and experience with collaborative teaching.

Our Campus and History
Park Day School was founded as a progressive K-6 school by teachers and parents in 1976, and opened with 28 students and four teachers. By 1982, the student body had grown to 90 students, and Park Day moved to the Temescal neighborhood of North Oakland, CA. The school purchased a two-acre campus on 43rd Street in 1993. Today, our four-acre campus is often described as "glorious" and "a jewel." Mature trees, lush flower gardens, birds, squirrels, a ch...icken coop, vegetable gardens and quiet niches are enjoyed by all. Swings, climbing bars, sandy play areas, a large all-weather playing field, multiple climbing structures and a shaded gazebo combine to provide an exciting and varied outdoor area for all ages.
