Children’s School teachers (PreK-5) work in classrooms of approximately 16-18 students each and are responsible for creating a community of learners in which children develop the skills of self-advocacy and resilience while demonstrating empathy and compassion for others. Classroom teachers plan, implement, and assess outdoor education experiences, language arts, math, science, and social studies curricula and work in collaboration with specialists in physical education, drama, Spanish, music, art, and computer science. They utilize technology to develop integrated units of inquiry. Classroom teachers also serve as important resources for parents, helping them understand the school’s educational philosophy and children’s developmental needs.
CSS is currently seeking an experienced upper elementary teacher (grades 4 to 5) who is ready to provide direct instruction in language arts, math, science, and social studies, with a strong interest in supporting the social and emotional growth of each child.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual selected for this role will report directly to the Director of the Children’s School and will fulfill all duties that will include, but are not limited to:
Provide a warm environment and possess an innate desire to nurture students
Work in collaboration with another co-teacher to create a unified community of learners
Lead teacher with considerable emphasis on growth and development in language & literacy
Create and support a positive, mission-appropriate climate suitable for students
Apply basic tenets of RULER (social-emotional awareness) and other CSS approved methodologies in the supervision and teaching of children
Plan interdisciplinary units of study using project-based curriculum that inspires children to investigate and research
Observe and record areas of growth, skill development, and social & emotional development
Evaluate the curriculum with a focus on content and skill alignment
Plan, implement and assess outdoor education experiences including overnight expeditions
QUALIFICATIONS & PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s or advanced degree (preferred) in elementary education from an accredited college or university
3+ years of experience lead teaching language arts in an early elementary school setting
Familiarity and practice with a variety of early childhood pedagogy
Strong understanding of children’s academic, social and emotional development
The ability and desire to integrate technology into lessons in authentic, child-centered ways
Experience implementing literacy skills (ex. Orton-Gillingham or Lindamood Bell methodologies)
Experience with elementary math instruction (ex. Math in Focus or Singapore Math)
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage students, colleagues, and families and build long term relationships
Team player willing to work collaboratively with co-teacher, colleagues, and families
Innovative mindset with skills in communication, student-centered learning, and technology
Attentive to details/conditions as they pertain to student whereabouts and safety
Enjoy building relationships with students and their families
Possess a love of the outdoors and a desire to inspire students to develop the skills and respect necessary to become stewards of the natural world
