Bay Ridge Prep, a progressive, student-centered, K-12 independent school located in Brooklyn, New York, is seeking a highly qualified Science Teacher to join its Upper School (grades 9-12) faculty for the 2020-2021 academic year. The ideal candidate should possess at minimum a Masters degree in Science Education or a Science-related field. The candidate should have substantive experience as a lead teacher (3+ years ideal), and should be motivated and capable of working with a wide range of students possessing a wide range of capabilities, strengths and weaknesses. We are looking to hire a Science teacher who is passionate about both science and the act of teaching it to adolescent learners.

Student to Teacher Ratio is: 5:1
Average Class Size is 15-18
Class Load: Faculty can expect 5 teaching periods plus one lunch period and one prep period each day.
In addition to its core and mainstream programming, Bay Ridge Prep provides programs dedicated to students with learning differences.
Teachers are expected to be well versed and capable of implementing educational pedagogies and theories, including Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development, and Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence.
Discipline is handled socratically, in a non-punitive manner. Issues are treated as moments for learning and opportunities for student growth.
Support for teachers:
The candidate we hire will receive comprehensive orientation and training to both the philosophical and curricular requirements of the position.
The candidate will also be directly mentored and overseen by the Science Department Chair, as well as Administrators.
Our faculty values both communication and collaboration. This includes department groupings, grade level groupings and program-specific groupings, as well as informal networks in which the faculty work together.
The school values and encourages professional development for its teachers, both in-house as well as outside workshops.
About the position: This is a full-time teaching position in science for someone with a strong knowledge of both Physics and Chemistry. Courses would include at least one section of introductory chemistry as well as one section of introductory physics with associated laboratory explorations. It would be considered a plus if the candidate could teach Advanced Placement Physics and/or had a passion/drive to advise our independent science research program. Knowledge of computer science is also a plus.
Responsibilities: Teaching four or five academic courses. Additional responsibilities include advising/moderating an after school club or activity, attending weekly faculty meetings and participating in weekly planning-meetings with other science teachers. Finally, the candidate should be expected to support other school-wide supervisory duties.
