Position Title: Preschool Teacher (One-Year Position) Department: Beginning and Lower School

Reports to: Beginning and Lower School Head
POSITION SUMMARY The Temporary Preschool Teacher works with a co-teacher to guide the social-emotional, cognitive, and physical development of four and five-year olds in a constructivist, developmentally appropriate, play-based program. The teacher assesses students’ progress and reports to parents on a regular basis. This is a one year opportunity set to conclude at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

Design an environment with provocations that promote inquiry, exploration, and play.
Use an inquiry as a guiding principle in curriculum design
Assess student learning on an ongoing basis and use this information to inform instruction
Co-plan with teaching colleagues. Work in a cooperative manner with teachers across the division
Foster a classroom environment where students feel comfortable to take risks, make mistakes, and be curious
Practice thoughtful, respectful, and effective classroom management techniques which support active learning and promote responsibility, self-management, and positive relationships
Work in partnership with students and their families
Maintain frequent contact with families including newsletter, Seesaw posts, emails, meetings, and informal conversations
Write progress reports and participate in parent/teacher conferences
Attend all faculty and community meetings
Supervise students during recess and other non-class times
Complete required Human Resource trainings each year
Keep an active registration with the Oregon Department of Education’s Central Background Registry.
Catlin Gabel School is a coeducational, independent day school located on 54 acres in the West Hills neighborhood of Portland, Oregon formed in 1957 by the merger of the Catlin Hillside School, which had been founded as Miss Catlin’s School in 1911, and the Gabel Country Day School, whose roots extend to 1859 with the founding of The Portland Academy.
