Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for an Upper School Mathematics Teacher (1.0 FTE) beginning in August 2020. The primary purpose of this position is to teach upper school math to students in grades 9 through 12 and to actively contribute to the upper school math department. The department consists of 11 members who have varied academic backgrounds, deep expertise and experience teaching young people, are dedicated to collaborative, innovative teaching, and are inspired by working with a diverse population of high school students. The math faculty work together closely both within course teams (Algebra 2, Precalculus, etc.), as well as with each other in the department as a whole.
Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions) The Upper School Mathematics Teacher will teach 4 classes, which may include any of the core mathematics courses. The specific course load could be tailored to the specific skills and experience of the candidate. Essential duties include:
Classroom instruction; with median class sizes of about 17 students;
Academic support for students outside of class time;
Academic advising for a group of about 10 students;
Collaboration in the work of the department on curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
Participation in departmental, divisional, and all-school meetings;
Performance of a school-wide duty, as assigned;
Active participation in the school community.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Enthusiasm for working with a driven and talented population of adolescents.
A willingness to engage and contribute to a dialogue about instructional practices with peers.
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidates will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
Ability to foster an inclusive learning environment and utilize varied pedagogical modes to engage students of diverse backgrounds, mathematical exposures, learning styles, and identities.
A desire to be involved in a wide range of school activities in and outside the classroom.
Ability to work harmoniously and collaboratively with adult colleagues.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field; or demonstrated coursework/experience with equivalent depth.
Experience teaching mathematics or a related field in a high school or college setting.
