Manhattan Country School seeks a 7th and 8th Grade English Teacher who brings passion and experience to teaching and working with children. The 7th and 8th Grade English Teacher is responsible for teaching a two-year literature curriculum for mixed 7th and 8th grade classes, as well as teaching grade-level 7th grade and 8th grade writing classes. They report to the Upper School Director.
Duties and Responsibilities
The 7th and 8th grade English teacher
teaches a two-year mixed 7th and 8th grade literature curriculum with texts including To Kill a Mockingbird, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Romeo and Juliet, Persepolis, and The Color of Water
teaches a 7th grade writing class that includes units on grammar and vocabulary, while also focusing on creative writing. Culminates with a unit on memoir writing in which the students write autobiographies
teaches an 8th grade writing class that includes units on grammar and vocabulary as well as units on personal essay and short fiction writing. Facilitates student planning of the annual Martin Luther King Day March in which the class creates a theme and route and each student writes and delivers a speech.
is an advisor to a small group of 7th and 8th grade students and communicates with those students’ families, including leading conferences
completes progress reports three times a year for all 7th and 8th grade students
accompanies students on two 1-week fall and spring class trips to our Catskills farm
fulfills other various duties, including lunch and park coverage
meets weekly with the 7th and 8th grade team to discuss students and program, including collaborating on the 7th and 8th grade activism project
Requirements and Qualifications
Full-time teaching experience
Strong knowledge of child development and progressive education
Provide examples of innovative pedagogy to promote inquiry and learning with adolescents
Command a range of teaching methods to meet different learning needs
Integrate projectors, laptops/iPads, Google applications, and other technology
Take initiative, have a sense of humor, and demonstrate strong listening and communication skills
Prior experience in a diverse community or working collaboratively to engage youth in community-building, social and environmental justice, and activism is a plus
