Guided by the Dalton Plan, the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student’s evolving needs, interests, and abilities, and fosters diversity as an integral part of school life. Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the broader community.
We are seeking a full-time Middle School 6th Grade Math Teacher and House Advisor for the 2020-2021 school year. The ideal teacher enjoys inquiry and insights by a broad range of math learners and is familiar with curricular innovations to enhance math learning beyond traditional methods. The 6th grade pre-algebra curriculum is a transition from the arithmetic-based curriculum of 5th grade to the beginning algebra presented in 7th grade. Students extend their computational skills with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions to include operations with integers, exponents and rational numbers. They broaden and deepen their understanding of ratio, proportion and percent concepts, and they also use the language of algebra to write and solve equations. Throughout the year there are several long term Assignments, including the interdisciplinary Greek Festival, during which students research Greek temples and build scale models.
Full-time teachers also serve as House Advisors, working with a group of 6th graders as the primary point of contact for students and parents. House Advisors collaborate as a 6th grade team to develop House curriculum on grade-specific topics and community building programs.
Candidates should be passionate and knowledgeable about progressive mathematics education, problem-based learning and differentiation. The Dalton School is committed to reflecting upon its curriculum and there will be opportunities to innovate and possibly incorporate the study of probability, statistics and geometry in the curriculum. We seek teachers who are enthusiastic about working collaboratively to design curriculum that addresses the whole child and to improve pedagogy.
