The School Counselor will be an integral member of the school’s leadership team and will be responsible for providing individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, social and emotional wellness education, and mental health outreach services to enhance the mental health and well-being of our students. The School Counselor will be proactive, visible, and deeply connected across all areas of the school community and is a member of the school’s leadership team.
Duties / Responsibilities:
Provide individual and group counseling to students, as needed and appropriate
Lead crisis intervention related to mental health concerns
Regularly lead classroom lessons across grade levels related to social-emotional learning
Ensure classrooms embed social-emotional learning and culturally-responsive practices across the school
Maintain regular and routine communication relevant administrators and other members of students’ teams
Maintain close communication and positive collaboration with faculty, staff, parents, and outside treatment providers regarding student mental health concerns, as needed, within the limits of the law and the ethical parameter of confidentiality
Develop social-emotional support plans for students requiring counseling services, and action plans for classroom teachers to support the individual social-emotional health of students with counseling plans
Refer students requiring additional mental health supports to outside mental health professionals, as needed, and create clear boundaries for your role as school counselor
Contribute to the design and implementation of programming to enhance a culture of wellness that fosters student support and self-advocacy
Create and disseminate educational content, provide consultation, and run workshops on issues relative to childhood/adolescent/pre-adolescent mental health for a variety of groups, including students, parents, and faculty
Work with others in school leadership to normalize conversations in the greater community regarding mental health and social-emotional wellness
Maintain records on all counseling sessions and parent communications
Assist the Head of Schools, school level leaders, and other members of the counseling team in the development of health programs, policies and protocols
Education and Experience:
Master's degree in School Counseling, Social Work, or related field
Minimum 3 years' post-masters clinical or school counseling work
Appropriate state licensure for school counseling
Experience working with adolescents and pre-adolescents in an educational setting.
