The Math Mastery program seeks to develop sophisticated and flexible mathematical thinkers who understand both the power and limitations of mathematics as a tool to describe and make sense of the world. True mathematical sophistication requires creative, critical, and logical thinking. Students in our program go beyond basic skill development and fluency to master computational thinking, mathematical modeling, problem seeking and solving, data analysis and visualization, reasoning and logic, financial literacy, and creative expression through mathematics. Above all, they partake of the joy and wonder of using math to create, collaborate, communicate, and think critically about the world around them.
In the Whittle math classroom, visitors encounter something that might not be instantly recognizable as a traditional math class: small groups of students scattered throughout classroom spaces and common areas working independently or with the guidance of a teacher, meaningfully engaged in work on skill-building, extending and supporting learning and projects from interdisciplinary blocks, coding and robotics, debating and discussing mathematical topics, formulating proofs, creating artistic representations of mathematical ideas, designing and playing math games, going on “math expeditions” on the campus or in the city, or working on the maker floor. At other times, observers might see a more traditional-looking math classroom, with a teacher or student(s) at the front of the classroom providing direct instruction to the class. At still other times, observers might see a student leading a discussion about their solution to a particular problem and asking other students to reflect upon and critique their thinking. Teachers might be working with small groups, facilitating class discussions, helping individual students solve problems and access resources, co-teaching with teachers from an interdisciplinary block or a maker space, assessing student progress through observation, conversation, or testing/quizzing, or learning alongside students as they explore their own mathematical questions. In math classrooms and throughout the school, an observer would see evidence of mathematical thinking on display: posters of student math work on the walls, three-dimensional objects and models, anchor charts of math strategies, student-produced videos, QR codes for student-produced podcasts, or interactive and creative art pieces rooted in and inspired by math.
As a member of an interdisciplinary instructional team that employs project-based, personalized, multi-disciplinary, inquiry-based approaches to teaching and learning, the Upper School Mathematics Teacher will facilitate a broad 9th – 12th mathematics curriculum including related electives, and student-centered, collaborative projects. The curriculum is designed to develop real-world numeracy and is supported by Acceleration Bands. The Upper School Mathematics Teacher’s passion for mathematics will engage students in mastering an understanding of key concepts. Specific courses will be determined yearly, based on the school’s needs while considering the teachers’ skills, knowledge, and interests. Additional key responsibilities include the following:
Develop a responsive, student-centered classroom community that fosters engagement, inquiry, risk-taking
Advise and participate in student life beyond the classroom
Adapt instructional methods and differentiate instruction as needed, in collaboration with the learning support team
Support X-Day curriculum development and programming
Participate actively in school/division/team meetings, in addition to activities and committees
Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Division Head

The following are highly desirable qualifications and/or requirements for the listed position:
Content and Education Expertise
Bachelor’s degree in content or related area required; advanced degree preferred;
Three years of full-time teaching experience, ideally with secondary school students
Knowledge of 6-12 Mathematics standards and frameworks
Working fluency in a range of courses in the discipline, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics
Ability to teach computer science a plus
Work experience in a culturally diverse environment with international families preferred
Knowledge of, and experience teaching in project-based learning and dual language education highly desirable
Demonstrated experience in building and delivering an innovative, student-centered math curriculum
Willingness to participate fully in the Whittle community beyond the classroom
Genuine commitment to working with and inspiring adolescents
A passion for teaching in an innovative, experiential, and student-centered environment
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff
