At HSH, The Collaboratory/Science Specialist coordinates “Making” within the Collaboratory/Maker space and throughout the school. The Specialist will implement a learning framework that prompts a child to manipulate various tools, media, and materials both in guided and free creation.
Essential Teaching Duties and Responsibilities:
Implement a full K-6 Science curriculum. Maintain curriculum based on NGSS for the elementary program.
Create a framework, implementation, and evaluation plan for the collaboratory (maker’s space) that incorporates research on elementary students (PS-6th) to bolster a child’s critical thinking and executive function skills.
Daily classroom instruction; including planning and teaching a challenging course of study in a developmentally appropriate manner, with experience in differentiating instruction and interactive presentation
Together with Assistant Head of School and ECE Director create Collaboratory alignment with enrichment classes and individual classes.
Create Collaboratory Schedule so each class attends and actively participates in the lab
Construct a year-long scope and sequence for the Collaboratory, oversee it, and hold a “May”ker’s’ Fair in May.
Help to facilitate and teach Maker/Tinker activities for PS- 6th grade
Parent Ed: Collaboratory nights
Create a parent sign up and role responsibility so parents can help assist in Collaboratory (similar to parent volunteers in the library) and know their expectations.
Integrate with enrichment teachers and core curriculum teachers
Willingness to initiate or participate in co-curricular activities (Astro Camp, May-kers Fair, etc)
Order and maintain hands-on science curriculum/materials aligned to science standards
A degree and preferably a teaching credential in a field that embraces Design Thinking, Science education, Mathematics, or Science.
The ability to passionately and effectively teach both Early Childhood and Elementary School Design Thinking, Science, and/or Mathematics courses
A strong and sincere commitment to professional development both in pedagogy and content area
Multicultural curriculum development and culturally responsive teaching experience is preferred
Strong interpersonal and cultural competency skills when working with students parents, faculty, and School leadership
High standards and high expectations for students
Commitment to being a positive and contributing member of the professional community
A love of children, a passionate commitment to Design Thinking, Science, and Mathematics, and a desire to work with all types of learners
