St. Paul Academy and Summit School seeks candidates for the position of Upper School English Teacher.
Position Begins: mid-August 2020
Status: One year, Full-time, Exempt
Department: Instructional Faculty, Upper School
This is a one-semester, full-time appointment to cover a leave which will begin in mid-August 2020 and end in June 2021. This leave position will likely include teaching two sections of Journeys in Literature (grade 9) and two sections of junior/senior literature electives (grades 11-12), although final teaching determinations of classes taught may be adjusted to meet departmental needs. In addition to teaching, this position will also include advising at the 9th-grade level.
The ideal candidates will have strong academic training and expertise in the study of literature, and experience with contributing to a high school program that creates an intentional curricular bridge between 9th and 12th grades’ expectations in terms of process, content, and skills. As importantly, we seek a candidate who has a demonstrated passion for the teaching of creative and analytical writing, and a track record leveraging this passion into effective practices which encourage students to think creatively, engage ideas deeply, and lead with intellectual curiosity. The most successful candidates will approach their role as an advisor with a drive to better understand the emotional needs of their students and support a program where self-reflection, empathy, and flexibility are the goals.
Candidates should possess a bachelor's degree. Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration and communication with both colleagues and students, is required. Candidates should support the mission of SPA, the vision of the Upper School, and be eager to join a professional community where openness to growth is the norm.
