Long-term Substitute Lower School Science Teacher, beginning August, 2020
Westtown School is searching for a Long Term Substitute Lower School Science Teacher, for second to fifth grades, from August 25, 2020 through mid-November.
Westtown’s 600-acre campus provides a unique lab where children develop their scientific literacy skills. Attention to the scientific issues children will face as adults and developing the life-long habits of environmental sustainability are key components of the Lower School science program.
In addition, the candidate will have experience with a design thinking approach as well as experience using technology tools relevant to problem solving and distance learning. The substitute teacher must be able to work in a self-directed way and collaborate joyfully with the Lower School faculty team. Fundamental to their teaching practice, the teacher will understand how diversity and inclusion enrich children’s learning and lives.
Igniting a love of science in children by turning knowledge of life science, physical science, earth and space sciences, engineering and technology into an inquiry-based curriculum
Supporting students’ social-emotional and identity development through teaching with a culturally responsive and inclusive lens
Term 1 Narrative report writing and fall parent/teacher conferences
Collaboration with classroom and special area faculty
Divisional community responsibilities (e.g. lunch/recess duties, faculty meetings)
BA or BS degree in Education or related Science field
Demonstrated passion and joy for working with Lower School students
Knowledge of child development and a commitment to social-emotional learning, differentiated instruction, and inquiry- and project-based teaching
Ability to use technology for professional responsibilities and in integration with teaching practices
Strong collaboration and oral and written communication skills
A deep commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community, for children and adults, based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices
Strong affinity for the mission of Westtown School and an educational philosophy consistent with the school’s Quaker values
