North Park Elementary School (NPES) is seeking a dynamic and innovative fourth/fifth grade STEM teacher to join our outstanding faculty. This person must have expertise and experience with curriculum development and instruction focused on an interdisciplinary, design thinking approach. The successful teacher will have a keen understanding of the social/emotional development of fourth and fifth-grade students, a passion for experiential/integrated learning with technology, as well as a collaborative teaching style. The teacher should embrace working with a diverse set of learners and implement teaching practices that meet the needs of all learners.
Duties & Responsibilities
This teacher will:
Meet the NPES Essential Expectations under the supervision of the Head of School with a particular emphasis on authentically engaging in self-reflection and annual development of growth and renewal plan based on NPES Characteristics of Professional Excellence (CPE). This includes written goals and progress toward those goals through instructional coaching.
Teach science and math to 4th and 5th grade students with a focus on integration and a design thinking approach that brings together all STEM elements
Plan for and host a “Shining Moment” exhibition night during which students demonstrate learning to parents and the community
Participate in and attend school-wide events
Develop opportunities, with the Administration, for 4th and 5th grade students to engage in STEM-associated extra-curricular opportunities, such as: coding, STEM, Junior Science Olympiad, robotics, other
Work collaboratively with the Director of Instructional Technology and Director of Teaching and Learning to further develop the integration of technology into the STEM curriculum
The ideal candidate will have:
Elementary Education Degree; M.A. in Education preferred
A strong grasp of curriculum design and program development rooted in best practices - knowledge, and experience with design thinking and curriculum development
A strong understanding of the developmental needs of 4th and 5th graders and the ability to manage a classroom effectively
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and administration to support and extend the objectives of the curriculum
Experience providing a nurturing, creative, challenging and inclusive environment that fosters mutual respect, a whole-child approach, and age-appropriate levels of independence
Exceptional organization and planning skills, superior written and oral communication skills
Familiarity and comfort with educational technology, specifically a knowledge of interactive whiteboard technology, Schoology Learning Management System, G Suite for Education, Scratch, and iPads; know-how and willingness to utilize technology to keep students and families connected
Comfort using maker-spaces and/or innovation labs and all the elements of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), to support and expand design thinking programming
Demonstrated record of developing cultural competency and problem-solving skills around adverse multicultural situations
Evidence of incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into teaching practices and curriculum development in previous positions
