Calvert School, an independent lower and middle school, is searching for a full-time Latin Teacher for its Middle School for the 2020-21 school year. Calvert School is dedicated to educating girls and boys through its time-tested method of teaching and its rigorous curriculum. Particular emphasis is given to mastering essential skills, inspiring a lifelong love of learning, and instilling enthusiasm, responsibility and self-discipline. Calvert School is located in Tuscany-Canterbury, a residential neighborhood in Baltimore City, just north of Johns Hopkins University and south of Loyola University Maryland, accessible from Charles Street and I-83.
Latin is introduced to Seventh Grade students at Calvert School as a full credit course. This introductory level course provides students with an introduction to first-year grammar, relevant classical mythology, early Roman history, Roman culture, and classical geography. Successful completion of Latin I allows students the opportunity to place into Latin II in Eighth Grade. The teaching responsibilities will include Latin 1 and 2, in Seventh and Eighth grades. In addition to teaching, faculty members at Calvert are expected to serve as academic advisors and contribute to the Calvert community as coaches and club advisors. They are also required to serve on school committees on occasion.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s and a background teaching Latin. Prior experience teaching middle school aged students is preferred. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an ability to inspire and support students and must have excellent writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
