Vermont Day School is an independent K-8 school in Shelburne, Vermont. The school offers exceptional instruction in core academics, along with a project-based approach to learning that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and collaboration.
We are seeking an experienced Middle School teacher to plan, develop and implement instruction in Mathematics for grades 6, 7 and 8. The Teacher will also lead Middle School program elements, such as Advisory, Study Hall, and Electives. The teacher will work collaboratively with Middle School Faculty members to build a strong community of Middle School students, as well as on projects and integrated learning experiences.
The Middle School Mathematics program follows a sequence of General Math, Foundations in Algebra, and Algebra. Students are grouped by skill level to ensure they are appropriately challenged and continuously engaged. The overarching goal of Vermont Day School’s Middle School Math program is to provide students with the Mathematical tools to think and reason logically, analyze data and statistics, communicate effectively and confidently, and address real world questions and challenges.
Our instructional approach utilizes a carefully designed balance of direct, systematic instruction and hands-on learning that challenges students to apply their knowledge and skills, and discover the usefulness of math in the world around them. Examples of projects include using data and statistics to create an effective business plan and using linear equations to design a stain glass window.
Minimum of 2 years Middle School Math teaching experience
Bachelor’s degree required
Master’s degree in Education or Teaching Certification required
Knowledge of best practices in Math education, and experience with Math curriculum design
Familiarity with a variety of assessment tools
Experience incorporating digital tools in the classroom
Knowledge of positive approaches to classroom management
Flexibility, entrepreneurial spirit and desire to work collaboratively
