Job Description and Desired Qualifications
Redwood Day seeks a self-starter, visionary educator to start a Mandarin language program at our school. Currently, Redwood Day offers Spanish for students in grades K-8. As part of our strategic plan, Our Next Reach, we will add Mandarin as a second language option for our students in the 2020-21 school year. This job will include teaching Mandarin to students in the primary grades (K-2) and in 6th grade, the main entry point to our Middle School program. The position will also include teaching an after-school Mandarin enrichment course approximately 3-4 times per week. Additionally, in the first year, the position will require substantial curriculum development for future years of program implementation. As the program and curriculum grow, the Mandarin teacher will teach additional grade levels and classes. Eventually, Redwood Day will hire an additional Mandarin teacher to collaborate and further build out the K-8 program.
The successful candidate will bring a deep passion for working with students ranging in age from five years old to fourteen. They will demonstrate a strong desire to collaborate with our existing Spanish teaching team to align expectations and learning outcomes. The successful candidate will also have a strong understanding of curriculum development in second language instruction, including a familiarity with the ACTFL standards for second language acquisition. Additional responsibilities include advisory, supervisory duties, active involvement in collaborative divisional meetings, and participation in various student and community activities.
This is a full-time position, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays), beginning August 2020.
Desired Qualifications and Traits:
Teaching credential or Masters Degree in Education (preferred)

Experience and familiarity with comprehensible input strategies and learning activities
A growth mindset and flexibility to adapt
