Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the nation’s 11th largest school division, is seeking a proven educational leader to serve as Assistant Superintendent for School Improvements and Supports.
FCPS, located in the Washington, D.C. region, serves a diverse student population of more than 189,010 students in grades pre-K through 12. FCPS students come from all over the world and speak nearly 200 languages. FCPS is the third largest employer in Virginia. The school division has approximately 27,500 full-time employees and an operating budget of $3.1 billion.
Plans, directs, manages, and evaluates school improvement programs, services and personnel divisionwide; works with the School Board, school-based administrators, and central office management to develop vision and strategies that align with the FCPS Strategic Plan to include closing gaps in access, opportunity and achievement; serves as a liaison and primary point-of-contact to the Virginia Board of Education.
Postgraduate Professional License in school administration or related field, with administration and supervision preK-12 endorsement. Doctorate preferred. Eight years of progressively more responsible experience in closing achievement gaps, providing solutions to school accreditation issues, and improving student achievement. Prior leadership role as principal and/or central office administrator preferred. Knowledge of school reform/turn-around strategies, high yield instructional methodology, and current trends in public school education and educational leadership. Can demonstrate broad knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and theories of modern management and current trends related to assignment. Ability to manage fiscal, physical, and human resources necessary to carry out the diverse functions and programs of the department. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with school and department-based personnel, officials, and citizens. Demonstrated ability to think strategically. Ability to plan, formulate, and execute policies and programs. Ability to explain and interpret FCPS regulations, policies, and rules to individuals and groups in order to gain compliance, cooperation, and understanding. Ability to analyze a variety of administrative, operational, and fiscal problems and make sound recommendations for solutions. Ability to establish effective cooperative working relationships with officials, including the ability to develop consensus that accommodates conflicting interests and viewpoints. Ability to create an organizational culture of client-centered service. Ability to manage a large staff through subordinates. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
