The Vice Dean for Education is a co-leader of the Mailman School of Public Health, in collaboration with the Deans, and provides strategic and administrative leadership to a highly integrated spectrum of educational offices committed to leading-edge pedagogy and student success. They will be responsible for maintaining and extending the preeminence of the School's educational approach and programs while expanding its impact through additional partnerships, reaching new student populations, and interdisciplinary connectivity. As a thought partner and manager, the VDE will lead more than 35 high-performing senior staff across key functions dedicated to educational initiatives within the school and will advise and support departments to achieve educational excellence. Building on recent strategic restructuring, the VDE's areas of leadership are poised for innovation and increased efficiencies.
Sustain positive momentum in the VDE Office: Functions reporting to the VDE have expanded and modernized. The staff is highly engaged, work in effective teams, serve in roles aligned with strategic priorities, and have been augmented by a number of strong recent hires. The next VDE should be a sophisticated organizational leader focused on preserving high functionality and morale.
Drive innovation and lead changes in public health education: The number of schools and programs of public health in the United States has grown significantly. MSPH must sharpen a competitive mindset to recruit excellent and diverse Vice Dean for Education, Mailman School of Public Health students. Online programs or online hybrid programs represent a significant opportunity and, with a new Director of Online Programs reporting to the VDE , MSPH is well-positioned to shape compelling offerings. Continuing education programs provide opportunities to connect with learners including MSPH's 13,000 alumni.
Direction of doctoral and postdoctoral programs must include core competencies in interdisciplinary science and emerging programmatic areas.
Leverage the VDE office to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion: The VDE has established several 4+1 programs within and outside of Columbia University and is poised to take advantage of opportunities to develop similar partnerships with Historically Black Colleges & Universities and schools with significant veteran populations. Offices of Admissions and of Student Support are both critical and pivotal points for building and sustaining a diverse student body. The VDE must continue to frame excellence in education and the MSPH experience in terms of inclusion and representation of the broadest possible populations, with a focus on students from under-represented backgrounds.
Serve as a strategic partner to the Dean and member of the Dean's leadership team: The Vice Dean for Education will be a key member of the Dean's 10-person leadership team, which advises the Dean on major strategic and financial decisions for the School. The VDE will be a strong team player who is highly self-motivated, inventive, and capable of leading with direct and indirect authority, and of educational leadership through scholarship
Administrative Oversight: Strategic, programmatic and budgetary leadership, and management oversight of the following functional areas of the Dean's Office: Office of Education:
Office of Enrollment Management, led by the Associate Dean of EnrollmentManagement, has oversight over student recruitment, admissions and financial aid, classroom support, the registrar, and educational policy. The VDE will optimize student recruitment and selection, setting admissions goals and new standards.
Office of Student Affairs (OSA), led by the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, meets with students individually to help navigate the University, support student success, and provide guidance on how to enrich students' time at the School from Orientation through Commencement.
Office of Professional Practice and Career Services (OCS), led by the Assistant Dean and Director of Career Services and the Associate Dean of Field Practice are committed to supporting MSPH students and alumni with the career education process. OCS services and resources are designed to help develop and refine career exploration and career management strategies; provide infrastructure to support successful job searches, and effectively market the student and the School to many different employers. OCS programming has resulted in outstanding six-month post-graduation employment rates.
Office of Educational Initiatives led by the Associate Dean for Educational Initiatives provides ongoing quality assessment of educational programs and leads curricular revisions and innovations. This office also leads efforts relating to accreditation and compliance with University and NY State requirements. Educational Program Oversight: Working with the School's senior leadership and academic departments, the VDE will provide leadership for all aspects of the development, delivery, assessment, and strategic growth of the School's educational programs, including:
Overseeing and updating the School's MPH curriculum, and signature MS, MHA, DrPH and PhD programs, as well as dual degree programs.
Developing, implementing, overseeing, and growing the undergraduate curriculum, continuing and education, and leadership education.
Overseeing/managing online and distance learning.
Building, implementing, and strengthening cutting-edge school-wide non-degree and degree educational initiatives that dovetail and/or synergies with existing departmental level programming or are expansions of successful department-level programs and initiatives.
Providing oversight and direction for potential educational collaborations with institutions and partners globally.
Strengthening and/or leading the further expansion of existing successful department-level programs and initiatives.
Ongoing evaluation of educational activities to ensure excellent quality and cutting-edge teaching.
Leading the School's CEPH national accreditation process, along with the ongoing CAHME accreditation in the health management programs.
Participation in School Leadership: The VDE will act as the Dean's senior education advisor and educational ambassador within Columbia University by:
Serving as a core member of the Dean's senior management team and the School's Leadership Advisory Committees, and providing input into major budgetary, programmatic, and strategic decisions affecting the School overall as well as the role of the educational initiatives supporting school goals.
Leading the development and providing oversight of multi-school educational initiatives within the University.
Working cooperatively with colleagues from other Schools of Public Health throughout the world.
Working in collaboration with the Development office, as well as the Dean, to organize the education of external constituencies and fundraising.
Student Recruitment, Admission, and Diversity: The VDE will have shared responsibility for enhancing student diversity by:
Promoting best practices and participation in national, cutting-edge discussions of diversity and the contribution of diversity to academic and programmatic excellence in schools of public health.
Participating in School initiatives, such as the BEST/CSIBS student diversity programs, EPIC, and undergraduate education
National recognition as an educator in public health, health sciences, human services, or related fields with an earned PhD, MD, DrPH, EdD or equivalent degree;
A thought leader in the field of graduate education with an outstanding record of teaching/education and mentorship;
Credentials commensurate with an appointment at the MSPH as full-time faculty at the level of Associate or Full Professor;
Demonstrated leadership and management expertise within an academic institution, including previous, significant, budgetary and program-development experience and an understanding of the issues and challenges facing public health and education including content needs, funding, accreditation, faculty incentives; and, problem/team-based learning.
Demonstrated dedication to increased diversity of students, staff, and faculty, to faculty and staff development, and to creating an environment characterized by inclusiveness, respect, and collegiality;
A strong commitment to students that is reflected by active and visible engagement in campus activities;
Evidence of the strong communication and interpersonal skills, coupled with compelling and decisive leadership, required to build consensus, develop and execute inclusive strategic plans, and facilitate collaboration among faculty, staff, administrators, and students;
Experience in strategic planning, including the ability to analyze and advise on the programmatic, budgetary, and political implications of decisions;
