The Elementary Homeroom Teacher embodies our mission and is passionate about working with our students and faculty. Lower School seeks an innovative and highly collaborative person to teach homeroom, preferably experienced in Grades 2-5. The primary role is to provide personalized, inquiry-based opportunities for students to develop understandings and skills necessary to function productively as problem-solvers in an ever-changing and technological world. This person needs to be passionate about inquiry-based, student centered learning and be committed to working as part of a team to foster positive attitudes towards self and society, as well as academics. The ideal candidate will continually evolve the designing, organizing and implementing of relevant curriculum in interdisciplinary ways.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND TASKS:
Display a genuine disposition for engaging children and promoting curiosity and creativity.
Develop strong working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents.
Relate to, establish rapport with, and motivate students to find joy and meaning in learning.
Be an integral part of the learning community and viewed as an ongoing learner who is fully engaged in professional growth.
Demonstrate a desire for feedback and a dedication to excellence.
Collaborate with other teachers to plan and teach units that encompass hands-on exploration, and inquiry process skills that build directly on the student's conceptual framework using the Understanding by Design model of instruction.
Responsibilities inherent in teaching lower school students especially with regard to personalized and developmentally appropriate curriculum and fostering of social skills and values.
Maintain an optimal learning classroom environment.
Collaborate with homeroom teachers and other specialist teachers to develop and teach interdisciplinary units of study.
Demonstrate expertise in a variety of presentation modes that accommodate different learning styles and purposefully generate opportunities for students to interact and share ideas with their peers.
Build a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implementing the practices of Responsive Classroom.
Develop meaningful formative and summative assessment where timely feedback is meaningful for student growth and success.
Work to build and evolve a curriculum continuum using the Understanding by Design approach to lesson planning.
Consistently demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, including accountable conversation that promotes the school’s core values.
Perform supervisory duties as assigned.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
Desire to engage in continual professional growth and to be a member of a dynamic community of learners.
BA or BS in Elementary Education.
Completed or in-progress master’s degree in education is preferred, but applicants with extensive, successful teaching experience are encouraged to apply.
3 – 5 years teaching experience.
Knowledge of Singapore Math and Readers and Writers Workshop preferred.
Proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish objectives of the school program.
Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
Use computer for communication and instruction.
Attend meetings, inservice or trainings required of this position that may/may not be during hours.
Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
Work in a fast-paced environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
Be able to 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Work in varied and extreme weather conditions, including extreme heat.
