The University Advancement Division (UA) is a comprehensive development and alumni relations enterprise with a staff complement of approximately 200 FTE. Functional units within UA include development/fundraising, alumni relations, stewardship and donor relations, advancement communications, special events, gift processing, research, prospect management, gift planning, corporate and foundation relations, information systems and management and infrastructure services. UA's mission is to build strong relationships with Tufts University's constituents, match donor interests with the University's needs and priorities, and secure the financial resources necessary for Tufts to achieve excellence in teaching, research and scholarship. The mission of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at the Fletcher School is to serve the community by:
Raising annual and capital funds to meet the school's strategic priorities;
Stewarding all donors so that impact and return on the investment is both timely and clear;
Creating and sustaining long-term, relevant relationships with the school's nearly 9,000 worldwide alumni as well as friends, including supporting approximately 72 domestic and international alumni clubs, administering world-class reunion programs
The Director of Development is a key member of the Advancement Team and plays a vital role in the department's achievement of its fundraising goals. The Director of Development will oversee the following areas: annual giving programs and capital/major gifts.
This position will build and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects, schedule meetings throughout the year to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward those individuals, with the goal of increasing donor engagement and support. Participate in the management of fundraising boards and committees, including the recruitment and management of volunteer leaders. As a part of the school's development team, s/he will also work with staff members to manage budgets, guarantee the high-quality stewardship of donors, ensure the proper processing and acknowledgment of gifts and pledges, and implement additional strategies to introduce new donors/friends to the school. The director will also assist the Senior Director in formulating overall fundraising strategy for the department.
Major Gift and Leadership Annual Fund Development
Identify, engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 70-80 high net worth donors and prospects who have a capacity to give $100k+.
Cultivate and solicit 60+ leadership-level annual fund prospects.
Work in partnership with the Senior Director and with the relevant Dean(s) and faculty leaders, in prospect cultivation and solicitation.
Prepare appropriate contact reports, proposals, and gift agreements for all prospects, and prepare briefings and support materials for meetings with the Dean, school administrative leadership and faculty, or University leaders.
Supervise and provide leadership for staff including hiring and performance evaluations; takes corrective action as necessary in accordance with University policies.
Encourage professional development for staff.
Ensure assignments are completed by deadlines and meet departmental standards.
Work with the Senior Director to track fund raising progress and meet with team to monitor metrics.
Departmental Strategic Planning and Collaboration
Work closely with departments and school's leadership team to develop fundraising priorities, goals, objectives, and schedules to raise major/principal gifts from individuals, and institution
Manage the development budget meeting with the partners in the Budget Center to ensure that budget projections are accurate and timely.
Provide guidance on budgetary issues to ensure cost effectiveness for areas of supervision.
7-10 years experience.
Extensive depth and breadth of knowledge and experience in philanthropy.
Advanced interpersonal and relationship building skills.
Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
Proven track record of structuring proposals and securing major/leadership gifts.
Experience managing or mentoring fundraising staff.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: Travel, some night and weekend work.
