The Kew-Forest School, a preschool through 12th grade, co-educational day school founded in 1918 in Forest Hills, NY, seeks an experienced Middle School Mathematics teacher. Kew-Forest is proud to enroll an astonishingly diverse student body, including approximately nine percent of whom are international students. Middle School students study Pre-Algebra (6th and 7th grades) and Algebra I (standard or Honors, 8th grade) as preparation for advancing to Geometry in 9th grade. This position also includes a section of Algebra II Trigonometry (10th grade), as well as various other assigned duties. The Middle School Mathematics teacher will work with a range of student learners across multiple grades and preference will be given to candidates with both strong Middle School experience and some Upper School experience.
The ideal candidate will have or be:
A love of Middle School students
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a mathematical field
Three or more years of Middle School Mathematics teaching experience (independent schools preferred)
A dynamic instructor who can reach, teach, and differentiate instruction as needed for a range of middle school learners
Active as an educational professional in the realms of Middle School Mathematics
Familiarity with a range of resources and pedagogies that can be effectively used with a range of learners, including backwards planning (Understanding by Design), and project based learning
Ability to create an inquiry-based classroom environment where students' ideas are central and content knowledge and skills are deepened through compelling questions and projects
Experience creating flipped classrooms and online learning experiences
Ability to effectively integrate technology in the classroom
Ability to develop virtual field trips around Long Island and the New York City boroughs
Familiarity and comfort working with a globally diverse group of parents, students, and colleagues
Strong written and oral communication to effectively communicate with students, parents, and colleagues
A collaborative instinct to facilitate working with other Middle and Upper School Mathematics teachers to assure coherence and consistency from grade to grade
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and lifelong learning
