Sidwell Friends Lower School is seeking a full-time substitute teacher who would be embedded into the Lower School community and be available to provide ongoing and reliable coverage and support to our PK-4th grade classrooms.
The Lower School program seeks to foster a love of learning and provide children with a firm grounding in the core academic subjects. It is built around rigorous intellectual exploration and joyful discovery. Students are challenged to think deeply about concepts and ideas, to make learning personal and relevant, to ask questions and to look for broader truths and understanding. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, attention to the “whole child,” strong differentiation skills, a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, and a strong grounding in best practices. Risk-taking, collaboration, a positive community spirit, and strong communication skills are essential characteristics of the candidate.
The substitute would report to the Lower School each morning, checking in with our Lower School Academic Dean to receive daily assignments. An integral part of the Lower School team, the full-time substitute teacher would be available to fill both short-term and long-term assignments. Due to the complexities of this year, the substitute teacher would be handling subbing in both the in-person and distance learning spaces, and facility with technology (particularly Zoom, Canvas and SeeSaw) is essential. On days when there are no absences, the full-time substitute teacher would be an additional set of hands in classrooms, helping support the teachers with lunch duties, recess duties and reinforcing health and safety protocols
Additional responsibilities for all teachers include supporting student wellbeing, partnering with families, assessing and evaluating student progress and participating in Meetings for Worship, faculty meetings, and duties.
A BA degree in Elementary Education (or comparable degree) and previous teaching experience at an elementary school is preferred.
Successful candidates will need to be able to successfully complete all background checking requirements at the time of hire, routine testing for COVID-19 as well as adherence to all health and safety protocols associated with working on campus. Current CPR/AED certification is required.
Applicants should upload a resume, cover letter and contact information for three professional references via our on-line application.
