The San Francisco Friends School, a Quaker school located in the refurbished Levi Strauss building in the heart of the Mission District of San Francisco, seeks an experienced early elementary leadteacher to begin the new school year with our team. SFFS opened its doors in the fall of 2002 and enrolls approximately 440 students K-8.
The school seeks a teacher who resonates with the Friends School mission, which provides an exemplary education in a community dedicated to peaceful problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, respect for the individual, and quiet reflection. Our Quaker ideals compel us to create a diverse and inclusive community; we seek a person who will thrive and contribute to such a community, both within and beyond the walls of the school. A San Francisco Friends School teacher strives to bring a sense of joy and challenge to their professional practice. A focus on community and relationship, deep engagement and humor are key ingredients for candidates in our progressive school.
We have two sections of each grade in the lower school, K-4. In kindergarten through second grades, each section has one full time assistant; in third and fourth grade, the assistant is shared between each section. All K-2 lead teachers mentor an assistant teacher and work in close collaboration with the whole grade level team. We are seeking an early elementary lead teacher with expertise and versatility at those ages and stages. Because we value professional and programmatic vibrancy, teachers at SFFS are likely to experience looping and grade movement during their tenure, even between divisions. Lower school students also experience classes with specialists in Music, Art, Drama, Dance, PE, Spanish, and Library. We welcome teachers who are eager to collaborate with one another and weave the disciplines together when most effective.
Responsibilities include: close teamwork for curriculum development, committee involvement, attendance at special events, creation of student portfolios, authentic assessment and progress report writing skills, and highly effective, clear parent communications. The school has vibrant and creative programs in the arts, service learning, technology, social justice, and social emotional learning, as well as the core academic subjects, mindfully choosing projects that meet our goals for student learning. The school supports a generous professional development program, encouraging teachers to attend workshops and seminars, visit schools, and engage with contemporary research relevant to our Quaker pedagogy, learning and the classroom, and our overall program.
