Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: January 1, 2021 Departmental Overview Founded in 1943, the School of Public Health has a 75+ year history of defending health as a human right in our local and global communities. We are fueled by a deep commitment to social and environmental justice, scientific inquiry and discovery, and community-engaged action. The School's mission is to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable. We do this by preparing the next generation of public health changemakers through preeminent educational programs; transformational research that sheds new light on the public health threats and opportunities of today and tomorrow; and by translating new discoveries into practice through partnerships that address the critical health needs and inequities in our diverse communities. The School is a world-renowned institution and widely regarded as the birthplace of social epidemiology and community-based participatory research. Our research broadly focuses on the interaction of biological, behavioral and environmental determinants of health. The School's more than 18,000 graduates can be found working throughout the world, both in the public and private sectors, tackling urgent public health problems such as climate change, pandemics, chronic diseases, and social inequality. The School annually enrolls approximately 740 graduate students, including students in the online MPH program, and 425 undergraduate students a year in the upper-division major. As a senior-level administrator reporting to the Dean, the Chief of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (Chief of DEIB) provides strategic leadership in developing, implementing and assessing programs and initiatives that advance these values for our students, as well as for other members of our community including faculty and academic employees, staff, and alumni. The Chief of DEIB is a leader, advisor, advocate, catalyst for change, and institutional resource focused on infusing DEIB and anti-racism into all programs and activities - including our student academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, student orientation and events, internships, career counseling, pedagogy, mentoring and other related programs - tracking progress towards these goals, and communicating progress to an engaged community. They are instrumental in envisioning, developing, implementing, and managing all aspects of related DEIB work, with DEIB defined as:
This position works collaboratively with others to translate broad directions into concrete goals and accomplishments, moving agendas and initiatives forward with both sensitivity and tenacity. The incumbent will be a visible, inspiring, and communicative diversity, equity, and inclusion champion. The Chief of DEIB establishes operational and programmatic objectives and work plans, delegates assignments to supervised staff, responds to a variety of issues, and handles sensitive negotiations with little or no precedence, requiring expedient and diplomatic action. The incumbent must be prepared to work in the background or foreground as dictated by the situation at hand. The incumbent routinely manages sensitive and confidential matters, and develops solutions on a wide range of issues. The Chief of DEIB works with faculty division chairs, ladder-rank faculty, all levels of staff, students, alumni, community partners, colleagues at UC Berkeley and other institutions, as well as donors. The incumbent will establish and maintain meaningful relationships with management and key cross-functional stakeholders, both internally and externally. The Chief of DEIB oversees several centralized student-centric efforts, such that students feel affirmed within the organizational culture and environment. They formulate policies and procedures for programs/initiatives, develop and monitor long-term organizational goals, and oversee financial and human resources. The Chief of DEIB plays a leadership and management role with school-wide initiatives, such as: the Diversity Respect Equity Action Multiculturalism (DREAM) Office; the DICE (diversity, inclusion, community, equity) Committee; the Anti-Racist & Racial Justice Action Program; and the Changemakers Initiative. As a direct report to the Dean, the Chief of DEIB is a member of the Leadership Team that makes strategic decisions on all aspects of the School, and is a key advisor particularly on issues and initiatives regarding DEI, culture, and climate as they relate to students, faculty, staff, and other member of our community. The Chief of DEIB collaborates with the External Relations Team with fundraising to support DEIB initiatives and programs. They provide leadership in identifying outreach services and are responsible for representing the School of Public Health nationally at diversity officer events, admissions events, and alumni convenings. The Chief of DEIB collaborates with UC Berkeley's Division of Equity & Inclusion, Graduate Division, People and Culture, SPH Faculty Equity Advisors, and other DEI officers to further the DEIB vision for the school and campus.
