The Lawrenceville School announces an opening for a History teacher.  We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic, collegial individuals who want to work with both adults and high school students in a collaborative and inclusive academic setting. Experience teaching World History and/or non-Western History is a plus.

The Lawrenceville History Department encourages students to understand the nature and methods of historical inquiry as part of their development as critical thinkers, to learn about accounts of the past in order to expand their perspectives on the present, and to encourage their development as well-informed, curious, and engaged global citizens.

Responsibilities

• Teach four sections, two to three preparations per trimester.
• Two seasons of coaching or equivalent co-curricular commitment, including at least one season of interscholastic coaching (or the equivalent).
• Advise five to eight students, and do one evening a week of “House duty,” providing supervision in a student residence from 7-11:30 pm. Although not necessarily starting their first year, faculty who reside in School-provided housing are expected to spend eight years living in one of the residential houses at some point in their career.
• Chaperone a weekend activity (dance, coffee house, etc.) at least once per term.
• Work within the department and in the broader school to foster community and belonging and to support the School’s anti-racist commitments.
• Work professionally and cooperatively within the department, the School, and the broader Lawrenceville community.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s in History; Master’s in History or related field, or M. Ed. with BA in History (or related field) preferred.
• At least two years high school teaching experience.
• Ability to teach both introductory and advanced courses in history; background in world history, non-western history, and/or economics a plus.
• A passion for history and for the teaching of history.
• Experience teaching historical research and writing.
• Background in and commitment to designing and facilitating collaborative, student-centered classes.
• Background in and commitment to culturally responsive teaching.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (oral and written) abilities.
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as needed and appropriate.
• Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with Google suite and Microsoft Office suite.
