The Grounds Superintendent provides leadership, direction, and oversight to a team of groundskeepers, utility crew technicians, and contractors for the day-to-day maintenance of the University grounds and management of event setups. This position shall also exercise appropriate arboriculture and horticultural skill to oversee grounds operations at the Barnes Arboretum at Saint Joseph’s University. The Superintendent is responsible for developing and executing the near-term and long-term plans for campus beautification in accordance with the University Master Plan in a way that is efficient and sustainable. This position is responsible for solid waste management and disposal and is responsible for the maintenance of the Facilities Management fleet of vehicles and the University parking facilities. (Essential Duties): | -Schedule and supervise work of groundskeepers and utility crew technicians as they safely keep the campus and the Barnes Arboretum neatly maintained and litter free; - Support all campus events and moves as required; - Coordinate with the Barnes at Saint Joseph’s University and other campus constituents to create and implement a cohesive, short and long-term vision for the Barnes Arboretum and to provide appropriate leadership as required; - Liaise with the Barnes Foundation and the Living Collections Committee as required to support the Barnes Arboretum; - Lead a team of university staff, contractors, and volunteers to maintain and improve the Barnes Arboretum; - Develop and implement annual grounds maintenance, repair, and renewal plans for items including, but not limited to, lawns, trees, shrubs, storm sewers, pavement, hardscape, playing fields, irrigation systems, and outdoor signage; - Competitively select and manage contractors providing grounds maintenance, athletic turf maintenance, snow removal, solid waste management, paving, tree removal, vehicle maintenance and Facilities uniforms; - Develop and implement an effective solid waste management program with the goal of making Saint Joseph’s University a zero-waste campus; - Ensure campus grounds are free from defects (ex. Tripping hazards, potholes, etc); - Implement an athletic field maintenance program meeting the applicable NCAA Division I standard or best practices; - Develop and implement a professional development program for assigned staff including the safe use of equipment; - Develop, implement and maintain programs for parts standardization, equipment procurement and inventory control; - Maintain all relevant records, logs and manuals for efficient operation, recordkeeping, and regulatory requirements; - Develop and maintain grounds, walkway, and roadway system design standards. - Promote and implement sustainable landscaping practices wherever practical - Develop, lead, and execute plans for snow removal and other emergencies that impact the grounds; - Install seasonal decorations as required; - Maintain the campus tree inventory; - Assist other Facilities Management staff as required; - Manage and oversee emergency response activities when on duty; - Develop plans for replacement or upgrades to building systems that have reached the end of its useful life; - Provide support to Facilities Management on capital projects as well as on-going maintenance contracts including conducting design reviews; - Bachelor’s Degree in horticulture, landscape architecture, or related field; - 10 years of experience in grounds maintenance; - 5 years of supervisory experience; - Superior customer service skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills; - Knowledge and understanding of relevant local, state, and federal codes; - Valid driver’s license - Higher education work experience; - Arboretum management experience; - Athletic turf management experience; - Ability to read construction drawing and develop cost estimates; - Experience supervising unionized employees - Advanced degree, certification, or licensing in applicable fields; - Experience operating heavy equipment (ex. Backhoe); - Experience working with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems. - Must be able to sit, climb ladders, climb stairs, stand, and drive for long periods of time; - Position is considered “essential personnel” and must report to work during inclement weather; - Position is required to report to work to assist during emergencies and special events (power outages, weather emergencies, commencement ceremonies, etc.); - Position may be required to work extended hours during period of high volume/workload; - Position will be “on-call” to respond to emergencies during off hours.
