Lower School Room Teacher
The Brearley School
The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 700 students K-XII, seeks candidates for Lower School Room Teachers in Classes K-IV. We actively seek to build, nurture and sustain a diverse faculty and student body. A bachelor’s degree and at least two years of experience in an elementary classroom are required. The Brearley School is committed to building an antiracist community. We expect our faculty, staff, students, parents and trustees to pursue meaningful change through deliberate and measurable actions. Founded in 1884, the school is a center of intellectual exuberance, attracting students from across and beyond New York City. Its mission has long combined outstanding academics with an insistence on larger purpose: we prepare our students for principled engagement in the world. Lower School Room Teachers are first and foremost responsible for the overall well-being of the child in school and play a vital role in the lives of our youngest students. They establish a foundation and create an environment in which each girl feels and knows that she is an integral part of the school community, capable of accomplishing all the tasks set before her. Helping each girl understand how she best learns is another critical facet of this position. Room teachers oversee the lives of their students from the moment they arrive in the homeroom until the last girl has been sent off at day’s end. They are alert to shifts of mood, behavior, work habits, and friendships, and they are current in the girls’ academic progress and activities. They are the experts on each of their students.

At the end of the program, ATs should feel confident in their ability to teach a group of children, have an understanding of the many ways in which children learn, and have developed a sensitivity toward and an interest in children as individuals. Through their ongoing questions and curiosity about education, Associate Teachers play an essential role in our Lower School. We believe that our school is strengthened by the diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and points of view which the faculty bring to teaching and learning, and we count on them to create and maintain an atmosphere of honesty, generosity, and genuine respect for the thoughts, efforts, and feelings of others. A Brearley teacher loves to teach students who love to learn and can encourage in them an ability to think critically and creatively, a deep curiosity about the world and a pioneering spirit. Founded in 1884, the school is a center of intellectual exuberance, attracting students from across and beyond New York City. Its mission has long combined outstanding academics with an insistence on larger purpose: we seek to prepare our students for principled engagement in the world.
