Upper School Math Teacher
The Stone Independent School
Five years ago, we founded a school based on a few simple design principles: that assessment in education is broken and we need to fix it, that school culture matters, that we can deeply connect students to work that feels important to them and still send them to some of the most competitive colleges in America. That school communities can be profoundly joyful places for everyone connected to it. In our first four years, we’ve opened and we’ve grown rapidly. Every day, our students come to school excited to design, build, and exhibit important things: they start and manage small businesses, they travel to Nepal, they learn calculus, they build siege machines, they write policy briefs on immigration, they care deeply about their work and their school and their work. And now, we’re growing again. Stone is looking for a full-time Upper School Mathematics Teacher for the 2021-22 school year. We are a problem-based, interdisciplinary day school looking for candidates interested in shaping an evolving skills-based mathematics curriculum for our 9th - 12th grade students. We’re seeking educators who are inspired by Mission, who want their work life to feel aligned with their values, who act with empathy and ethicality and gratitude. All employees are expected to be full members of the school community, engaging in student life, academic purpose, and the school’s mission. A typical teaching load consists of three sections of 5-20 students and one prep each five-week term. The opportunity exists to teach all levels of mathematics from algebra through multivariable calculus and linear algebra. Our math courses are highly collaborative and hands-on, while maintaining respect for traditional foundations. Desmos and R statistical computing technology are used regularly and familiarity with those tools is an asset. Students in our math courses are regularly required to submit writing and reflection assignments as well. Teachers at Stone are encouraged to teach core courses as well as electives outside of their core content areas -- and to enjoy the vulnerability and exploratory nature of doing so! Additionally, full-time faculty members teach one five-day course during Intensive Week, help lead morning community time, serve as club and House leaders, mentors, advisors, and coaches. Our teachers are engaged in the work of designing curriculum and creating a school culture alongside our students. The right candidate will be inquisitive, interested in educational design, engaged by Stone’s mission and creative ethos, highly energetic, and committed to working with adolescents. And not a afraid to laugh. A lot. We’ve built an extraordinary faculty that consists of innovative educators who like to ask "why": about pedagogy, about school culture, about education. If you are interested in discussing a career at Stone, send a letter of interest, a short essay explaining your philosophy of education, a resumé, and a list of 3 references to employment@stoneindependent.org. Conditions of Hire: Applicants must complete a criminal background check, inclusive of fingerprinting. In addition, applicants must complete satisfactory reference checks, confirmation of compliance with federal and state employment laws, and any other required condition of employment.
