Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a 3/4 time (0.75 FTE) middle school English teacher. This appointment begins in mid to late August, 2021.  

Responsibilities
The English teacher position, reporting to the Middle School English Department Head and the Middle School Director, will join a highly collaborative department with colleagues that are creative and constantly exploring best practices for inclusive and culturally responsive language pedagogy. Specific responsibilities for this position include: 
 

1. Teaching two sections of seventh grade English and one section of sixth grade English to a diverse student body with varying experiences and exposure to reading and writing, with an emphasis on creating confident, fluent writers and critical, insightful readers;
2. Providing academic support for students with different learning styles and strengths outside of class time (answering homework questions, providing extra writing help, etc.) as needed;
3. Actively collaborating and participating in the work of the English Department on innovative, inclusive, and equitable curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
4. Attending English Department, grade-level team, and faculty meetings as scheduled;
5. Acting as an advisor for middle school students; and
6. Participating in the life of the school community, which includes grade-level outings, admissions events, outdoor trips, and service learning activities. 

Requirements and Qualifications
A successful candidate for this position will meet the following requirements and qualifications: 
 

1. Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions.  The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
2. Prior experience working with a diverse student population and demonstrated equity and inclusion mindset.  
3. A commitment to and proven experience in using a range of literature and resources that represent diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, voices, and viewpoints;  
4. A bachelor’s degree in English or a closely related field;
5. Experience teaching English, preferably to middle school students, and a passion for interacting with middle school students in and outside of the classroom;  
6. Excellent collaboration skills and a pitch-in, can-do attitude;  
7. Proficiency in technology and digital teaching tools; and  
8. Candidates must satisfactorily complete two nationwide criminal background checks.
