The San Carlos School District, San Carlos, California, Board of Education, is seeking a highly qualified and fully certified Superintendent. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position between June 1 and July 1, 2021 (date mutually agreed upon between the successful candidate and the district).
McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development, in collaboration with the California School Boards Association, has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the Governing Board in identifying and screening the candidates.
Location: 25 miles southeast of San Francisco
The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. The Board developed the following desired characteristics:
A visionary leader who is experienced and committed to student achievement as integral to the culture of the district and each school. This passionate and innovative leader is open to taking risks as they reimagine leading in public education through knowledge and application of current and promising best practices that yields success for all students. The next superintendent must know the best practices in teaching and learning, be able to implement effective curriculum, assist in the selection of purposeful professional development, and employ systems of multiple metrics that all result in increased achievement for all students. This instructional leader should have demonstrated creative management strategies they have implemented to close achievement, opportunity, and access gaps between target student groups, including culturally relevant instruction as well as socio-emotional learning.
An effective collaborator and communicator who listens to and thinks about multiple perspectives to drive decisions. This leader has strong verbal, written, and digital communication skills, and is accessible to all including those with differing opinions. This leader articulates a clear vision and employs a strategic communication plan to support the district goals through multiple channels of messaging. The next superintendent must have a proven ability to bring people together to build trusting, transparent, inclusive, and respectful relationships with the Board, administration, staff, bargaining units, students, families and community. This leader must demonstrate cultural competence in bringing diverse groups and individuals together and working collaboratively while managing the dynamics of differences to effectively resolve conflict in schools and across the district. This leader must be able to effectively work with the Board and District stakeholders to set the vision, goals and objectives to guide the implementation and monitoring of the district's strategic plan. The superintendent is expected to be the person who invites families and the community to be involved with the schools and likewise models the District’s involvement with the community through their own participation in the life of the community.
An educational equity leader who has the moral compass and courage to act upon all decisions through an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens. This proven equity leader must be passionate, yet emotionally intelligent in the demonstration of intentional and strategic leadership driven by data and research to systemically address educational equity gaps. A culturally proficient person who values diverse cultures and ethnicities, assesses their needs, and responds effectively. This equity leader understands how to ensure resources are allocated to students based on their individual needs to support them reaching their full academic and social potential. This leader actively engages in the interruption of policies, practices, and structures that perpetuate institutional racism and all forms of oppression.
An operational manager who has the abilities to understand and implement solutions to complex issues of California school finance, education law, collective bargaining and strategic planning. The superintendent must be a transformational leader who has the knowledge and skills of all aspects of district and site leadership. This specifically includes budget development and the ability to prioritize and equitably direct resources based on student needs through utilizing the Local Control Accountability Planning (LCAP) process. They must have the ability to leverage the strengths of staff through empowering them and building trusting relationships to support the creative transition from the vision to practice. Being able to implement and monitor personnel practices of evaluation, hiring, and discipline are skills needed in the next superintendent.
The next superintendent is expected to be student centered through empowering students, families, and the community to be involved in a transparent decision-making process that results in benefiting all students. San Carlos School District has a history of supporting the whole child to include programs that nurture a healthy life, social emotional well being and development of the creative talents of our students. Our next superintendent must be able to recognize and support that students demonstrate achievement in diverse ways and must be able to provide agency for students to access resources they need to achieve both academic and social success. To that end we desire a leader who promotes learning through active student engagement and ownership of instructional strategies such as project based learning.
