We are currently seeking an Upper School History and Social Sciences Teacher to join in the vision of the Department for the 2021-2022 school year.
Position: Upper School History and Social Sciences Teacher Reports to: Head of Upper School and History and Social Sciences Department Chair FLSA Status: Exempt
Provide a stimulating and developmentally appropriate educational environment in accordance with the Goals and Criteria of the network schools of the Society of the Sacred Heart
Plan and deliver foundational content knowledge with differentiated instruction in critical thinking and creative problem solving to effectively engage students in relevant topics and global citizenship
Teach multiple sections of Upper School level history, to possibly include the following courses: a two-year World History curriculum (9th and 10th grades), AP World History, United States History (11th grade), AP United States History, and electives (12th grade) in History and the Social Sciences
Possess a sincere and visible commitment to leading edge teaching practices and continued professional development and growth
Model a genuine passion for and command of subject matter and intellectual history, and enthusiasm for working with high school students
Demonstrate success in implementing a scaffolded, organized, inquiry-based, student-centered instructional approach
Design instruction that encourages students to think critically, question frequently, and reason creatively while problem-solving, and inspires confidence in their own abilities
Create learning opportunities to encourage curiosity, exploration, and discovery appropriate to the developmental levels and learning styles of the students
Support all learners through diverse strategies and approaches in a caring classroom environment where students learn and interact positively with one another
Demonstrate proficiency with current educational technology, especially as part of classroom instruction and for hybrid/distance learning; facility with electronic communication and learning management applications
Plan formative and summative assessments that reflect differentiated approaches to identifying student understanding
Maintain supportive relationships with the student, advisor, and parents through active and professional communication. This also includes writing reports to parents on students’ academic progress, social growth and learning needs at designated times of the year
Engage in active participation in the Upper School community, including division and departmental meetings, and assigned non-instructional duties
A graduate degree in history or a related field; two or more years experience teaching World History, United States History, and other courses in the Social Sciences to Upper School students.
The candidate should be able to provide lesson plans and samples of pedagogy and methodology which include the integration of inductive learning. The ideal candidate is energetic, approachable, knowledgeable, and eager to be an active member of a dynamic learning community. The candidate has abilities to engender passion and curiosity, and the promotion of discernment and problem-solving through an understanding of the past and a connection with current events and real-world challenges.
