Upper School English Teacher - Long-Term Substitute
The Ethel Walker School
The Ethel Walker School English Department will have an opening for a long-term substitute English teacher that begins in August 2021 and extends through December 2021. Candidates should have a BA in English or a closely related field. Preference will be given to those candidates with advanced degrees in English or Education and who have 2-5 years of classroom teaching experience. Candidates must be comfortable or willing to learn how to integrate new technology into the classroom. Candidates should be able to create a culturally responsive classroom environment. This position reports to the Dean of Faculty and Department Chair. Founded in 1911, The Ethel Walker School (www.ethelwalker.org) is an independent, college-preparatory, boarding and day school for girls in grades 6 through 12. Walker’s is committed to a diverse, well-rounded and joyful student body with broad emphasis on scholarship, the arts, athletics, and service. It is a foundational experience for the students yielding lifelong intellectual curiosity, academic and life success, and commitment to community. The campus is located on 175 expansive acres in Simsbury, Connecticut. Recent large-scale projects have beautified and advanced the functionality and marketability of the school and physical campus. This includes the completion of the approximately 70,000 square-foot Centennial Center, a state-of-the-art, multi-use facility housing impressive athletic facilities including a pool, squash, basketball and volleyball courts, dance studios, student center, athletic training room, and medical services. Walker’s boasts a nationally recognized equestrian program operating with over fifty horses on-site, a hundred+ acre on-campus facility with a nationally renowned head of riding and superb equestrian trainers. Recent renovations have entailed building excellent science laboratories/classrooms, middle school and residence hall updates as well as new outdoor turf and grass fields.

Responsibilities: A highly developed sense of collaboration and a willingness to work with colleagues is required for this position. You will work closely with colleagues to make sure the School’s mission and goals are being met and that innovation is being brought to the classroom. You will have a large amount of autonomy in planning lessons and developing units and assessments. A commitment to teaching students how to write well, with the goal of publishing their work, is essential. A strong commitment to teaching a love of reading and writing is also key. The successful candidate will show an empathy for and a willingness to work with adolescent girls at this phase in their development. Requirements:
