Professional Children’s School, founded in 1914, provides a rigorous college-preparatory program with flexibility and adaptability for professional and pre-professional students. We serve Middle and Upper School students who come from multiple states and numerous foreign countries, and whose interests include dance, music, acting, modeling, athletics, art, and entrepreneurship. Our students are serious about their academic studies while they pursue their professions outside of school. PCS is a “bring your own device” school and we utilize technology, including a learning management system, to support our students, particularly when their professions make it impossible to attend class. During the coronavirus pandemic during the past year, we began with a robust online program but have now pivoted to a hybrid program, allowing students to attend school and class in person or to remain online at the discretion of their parents and in line with the guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and the New York City Department of Health. 

Professional Children’s School seeks to hire a librarian who will also have a teaching assignment in the English department.  We are looking for a librarian and teacher who is adept at using technology for both learning and teaching purposes, is comfortable collaborating with colleagues, and has an appreciation for the developmental differences between Middle and Upper School students.

Specifics of the Librarian role include:

• Managing all aspects of library operations, including: physical and virtual collection development,  cataloging, purchasing, budgeting, managing and maintaining databases and other resources, maintaining Library website, reference services, and training of faculty in the use of online sources and web based applications
• Teaching Upper School Research and Information Literacy online course
• Collaborating with Middle School teachers to support instruction in library and media literacy skills
• Partnering with faculty about the integration of information literacy skills into the curriculum
• Promoting reading (creating displays, book lists, giving booktalks, providing readers’ advisory to students and faculty, planning book fairs and/or author events)
• Ordering materials via NYC Department of Education NYSSL, NYSTL, and NYSLIB loan programs
• Attending school functions, faculty meetings, etc.

Specifics of the English teacher role include:

• Teaching content and skills in English language, literature, composition, grammar, reading, and writing
• Developing in students an appreciation of good literature of all types which is both diverse and inclusive of the community at large
• Using technology effectively for student learning in both a synchronous and asynchronous environment
• Providing robust educational materials for when students cannot be in class, and comfort in being flexible with due dates due to students professional commitments
• Holding one-to-one meetings with students who are away from the classroom for professional reasons and with those who need additional support  
• Evaluating academic and social growth of students, preparing report cards, and keeping a record of attendance
• Collaborating with other English teachers in the department to develop curricula, discuss learning strategies, and make decisions with respect to the scope and sequence of the program

Requirements:

• MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited program

Preferred Experience:

• Teaching experience in 6-12
• Knowledge of young adult literature
• Familiarity with Famis purchasing system
• Experience with a Learning Management System for education
