Annie Wright Schools seek a Middle School Science Teacher to begin on August 23, 2021. This is a full-time position.
Annie Wright’s strong community cultivates individual learners to become well-educated, creative and responsible citizens for a global society.
The Middle School Science Teacher is passionate about what they do and who they teach. They use real world examples in their science lessons to make their classes come alive and to engage students in inquiry, experimental design, and scientific research. This teacher gives detailed feedback to their students to enable them to grow through the learning experience and to become thoughtful and reflective citizen-scientists. While hands-on science labs are the starting point for investigations, this teacher guides students to use a wide range of interactive resources and media, make interdisciplinary connections, and consider the implications of science from a global perspective. They view science as fluid, wherein life science, physical science, and earth science do not exist in silos, but are instead integrated with units emphasizing the connections between these areas of study.
Community and strong, positive relationships are essential in Middle School; therefore, the Middle School Science Teacher must authentically connect with young adolescents of all backgrounds and abilities to enable them to explore the world from multiple perspectives with eagerness and drive. Compassion and an understanding of the needs of this age group are vital to simultaneously support each student's academic and social-emotional growth and hold them accountable for their actions and choices.
While energy, patience, and a little bit of goofiness are key elements that are indispensable for this position, the Middle School Science Teacher is also a team player who thrives in collaborative endeavors, both as an advisor and as a subject specialist. The creation and implementation of interdisciplinary units of inquiry that captivate, inform, and stretch our students are essential components of the Middle Years Program. While experience of the International Baccalaureate (IB) is not a prerequisite, an appreciation of criterion-based grading and the global holistic approach of the IB is important.
