Berkeley Carroll is a Pre-K through grade 12 college preparatory school of 970 students located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York City. Our vibrant intellectual community draws students from all over the city. Admission to the school is competitive, and both our parents and students value achievement.
Science classes at the Berkeley Carroll Lower School are hands-on, inquiry driven explorations into big science questions from all scientific disciplines. The goal of the program is to allow all children to experience joy and excitement in exploration, learn how to think and investigate as scientists, and make connections between classroom studies and the broader world outside of school. Additionally, the program helps students recognize and practice how we can use scientific inquiry and understanding to work towards developing solutions to modern health, environmental, and equity issues.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in both science and education and is able to make curriculum decisions independently that support department goals and ensure that topics resonate developmentally. The science department plays a significant role in Berkeley Carroll’s Health and Human Sexuality curriculum, and the science teacher must feel comfortable teaching about related topics including puberty and reproduction in an inclusive manner.
Plan scope and sequence of curriculum for grades 2-4; curriculum should be diverse in its themes and loosely informed by NGSS standards and be in alignment with science topics in PreK-1
Develop hands-on inquiry driven lessons to support curricular goals
Collaborate with teachers in other disciplines to design integrated STEAM projects
Incorporate Responsive Classroom tools into everyday classroom practice
Incorporate anti-racist and other diversity principals into both implicit and explicit curriculum
Teach about reproduction and puberty concepts using diverse and expansive language in a way that includes all children and families
Use formative assessment to monitor student progress and provide student feedback
Communicate with homeroom teachers and student services regarding student progress and provide support to individual students as needed
Communicate with parents regarding student progress and classroom curriculum
Berkeley Carroll is committed to an inclusive program and a diverse faculty and student body. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to and experience with diversity, equity or inclusion work are especially encouraged to apply.
Applicants should send a cover letter and resume to Amanda Pike, Lower School Director, at email@example.com.
