Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, and the other in Manhattan. The Upper School, located in the Bronx, is comprised of approximately 600 students and over 100 faculty members.

We are looking for passionate educators to join our community who are committed to progressive education, who consider ethics to be at the core of their work with students and colleagues, who are committed to pursuing professional development that strengthens their anti-bias and inclusive curriculum lens , and who will contribute to the academic success of all of our students. Currently, we have a full-time position as a History Teacher for our Upper Division. The position will begin on September 1, 2021.
Primary responsibilities include teaching a 4-course load and being available to meet with students on an individual basis. The candidates must embrace habits of collaboration, as working with other teachers not only fosters professional growth and improves student learning but is essential as the school engages in curricular development around diversity, equity, and inclusion. The position requires teaching at least two sections of one survey course (either US History or World History) and two electives.
Ideal candidates will be energized by employing a range of pedagogical approaches and will be excited by the opportunity to teach a diverse student body in a values-based community. The ideal candidates have also demonstrated a commitment to addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside the classroom. A passion for working with high school students, a flexible attitude, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a sense of humor are essential.
Bachelor’s degree in history or a connected discipline such as social studies education, political science, American studies, African-American studies, etc. Masters degree is preferred.
Minimum 3 years of experience teaching in history or a connected discipline.
Capable of teaching US history, world history, and, in particular, engaging in interdisciplinary co-teaching.
Prior experience in a high school environment working with students from grades 9 to 12.
Proficient with using technology, including interactive boards in the classroom.
Passion for progressive education.
