The New Community School empowers bright, talented students in grades 5-12, who are challenged by dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. The New Community School is currently hiring a Reading and Language Skills Teacher for the 2021-2022 school year. 

The teacher will guide students in developing a knowledge base of the structure of the English language and in developing strategies for applying effective learning skills to increasingly difficult reading and writing tasks. 

Job Description: 

• Teach reading, including syllable patterns, morphology, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and writing skills in a small group or individual setting.
• Administer and/or interpret language skill and psychological testing.
• Develop and implement individualized instructional plans for each student.
• Use a diagnostic/prescriptive approach for the planning and delivery of instruction and to remediate basic language skills.
• Utilize Orton-Gillingham (structured, systematic, and multi-sensory) techniques and strategies.
• Facilitate ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including written reports and parent conferences in accordance with the school calendar.
• Communicate with academic teachers concerning appropriate academic accommodations and learning styles of students.
• Serve as the faculty advisor to 2-4 students.
• Facilitate and participate in student life activities.
• Participate in the school’s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring programs.
• Perform other supervisory duties as assigned.
