The goal of the elementary music program is to encompass a wide variety of inclusive musical experiences designed to provide students with strong vocal skills, a robust exposure to general elementary music instruments, solid music theory foundation, memorable performances, and a life-long appreciation and love of music. The elementary music teacher is an integral part of connecting music to our multicultural community, and providing musical leadership and connection to Campbell Hall’s strong Episcopal identity. The elementary music teacher meets with every grade level homeroom during the school day as part of the K-6 rotating schedule.
Implement engaging age-appropriate lesson plans, teaching choral and performance skills, introducing students to general elementary music instruments (song flute/recorder, hand percussion, African drums, guitars, ukuleles, boomwhackers, Kodaly/Orff instruments, etc.), as well as basic music theory concepts and music appreciation to grades K-6
Use a variety of instructional techniques to ensure all students are learning
Collaborate with the elementary chaplain to provide musical leadership for our elementary chapel program including teaching chapel songs during music class
Prepare the students for the two mainstage music concerts held each year, one in December and one in May, as well as Grandparents’ Day, Closing Day Chapel and other opportunities
Collaborate with the other performing arts teachers in preparation for the mainstage concerts
Organize effective, timely rehearsals including advance planning with the sound engineer and maintenance department for riser set up
Oversee, manage, and upgrade, as needed, the current collection of choral music, music textbooks, and instruments
Communicate promptly and effectively via report cards, narratives, parent/teacher conferences, calls and/or emails with parents, and via meetings, emails and calls with colleagues and administrators
Utilize a varied and diverse repertoire
Attend faculty meetings and professional development days and other meetings as needed
Carpool and yard duty when assigned
Participation in professional development, expanding repertoire and music pedagogy, and staying up to date with best practices
Meet and surpass National and California music standards
Bachelor’s degree or higher
At least 3 years of classroom experience (ideally at the elementary level)
Knowledge and skill in choral music
Familiarity of general elementary music instruments (percussion, recorder/song flute, hand drums, guitars, etc.)
Ability to play piano/keyboard in order to accompany students
Ability to balance process vs product, instruction vs performance, within the allotted time frame of the class block schedule and of the production calendar
Ability to teach effectively and connect with students ranging in age from Kindergarten to 6th grade
Ability to engage students who have a wide range of musical skills within a grade level
Demonstrate a willingness to grow and evolve the music curriculum, always seeking to make the program inclusive and cover a range of genres, instruments, vocal styles, and teaching techniques
