All members of the Stuart administration, faculty and staff are expected to work together to create an educational environment where the Goals and Criteria of the Sacred Heart are lived and where all are committed to educate to: A personal and active faith in God A deep respect for intellectual values A social awareness which impels to action The building of community as a Christian value Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom Job Summary The Lower School STEM/Technology Teacher is responsible for providing a stimulating and developmentally appropriate educational environment in a way that is in accordance with the Goals and Criteria of a Sacred Heart education and the philosophy that implements it. This philosophy includes providing children opportunities to develop spiritual, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills. The Lower STEM/Technology Teacher leads in curriculum development, classroom environment, and parent relationships and communications in their specific specialty. The Lower School teacher is expected to be in school from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The position of Teacher is a ten-month position as outlined in the employment agreement. The Teacher is responsible to the Head of the Lower School and has the following responsibilities: Essential Functions - Organizing and providing developmentally appropriate educational programs and instruction; planning and implementing curriculum and differentiated instruction for Lower School students
- Providing activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving appropriate to the developmental levels and learning styles of his/her students
- Planning and preparing supportive, positive, caring classroom environment in which children can learn and interact positively with one another; overseeing instruction and authentic assessment; supervising children in the classroom
- Interacting with parents; maintaining open and cooperative communication with parents and families, encouraging their involvement
- Evaluating and implementing formative assessments, as well as be able to fluidly report on a variety of skills and concepts within a rubric and assessment
All teachers are expected Specifically Related to STEM/Technology: - Provide instruction for grades kindergarten through fourth grade fostering an understanding of how scientists and engineers work, learn, and share ideas about the physical world
- Develop and implement STEM educational activities for students that focus on the integration of learning technologies, science, math and engineering topics
- Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Crosscutting Concepts, Science and Engineering Practices and Disciplinary Core Ideas
- Experience with the latest educational technologies and continued professional development to keep abreast of new technology initiatives
- Integrate the four STEM principles into the instructional program utilizing project-based and applied learning experiences
- Emphasize 21st century skills that facilitate creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking
- Provide opportunities for students to demonstrate learning through cross-curricular projects and community showcases
- Provide students with experiential learning opportunities that builds connections between classroom experiences and the world around them, with a particular emphasis on environmental issues and outdoor education ( Stuart’s 55- acre campus, nature trails, chicken coop and school gardens)
- Upgrade curriculum and materials as needed
- Promote respect for diversity, equity and inclusion as a core value of the school by maintaining a culturally responsive classroom environment and implementing a diverse curriculum that offers a variety of voices and perspectives
- Support ongoing Lower School classroom projects with specific technology, instruction, training and guidance for classroom teachers. Provide 1-1 technology training as needed
- Bi-monthly TECH class (in addition to weekly STEM classes) provides explicit instruction for grades K-4 in computer science scope and sequence skills including block coding and robotics
- Regular collaboration with classroom teachers integrating STEM with literacy, social studies, math,physical education and the arts
- Attend regular meetings with the technology department and IT support team
- Troubleshoot hardware, software issues (EC-4)
- Maintain and update devices (iPads, Chromebooks, MacBooks)
- Remote learning- troubleshoot issues with the Huddle Cart and devices, provide assistance to faculty, students, and families during remote learning
All teachers are expected to (general requirements): - To assume serious collaborative responsibility for the educational environment of the School by conducting themselves at all times in a responsible, ethical, and professional manner
- To be available before the opening of School to attend teachers’ meetings, etc., and to be available after the Upper School’s graduation to attend teachers’ meetings and complete end-of-year duties
- To attend all faculty meetings and workshop days as they are scheduled during the year
- To assist at School functions designated by the Head of School as necessary for the operation of the School, e.g., Parents’ Night, Open House, Parent/Teacher Conferences, etc. It is understood that these duties may sometimes extend beyond the normal hours for school
- To participate fully in regular School programs, e.g., committees, assemblies, field trips, etc.
- To share in the planning and direction of student activities and School programs, if appointed by the Head of School
- To maintain high standards for his/her ongoing professional development and to participate in the professional development programs offered by the School
- To assume responsibilities as assigned for the supervision of students, including at times of early dismissal due to inclement weather. It is understood that these duties may sometimes extend beyond the normal hours for school
- To use technology effectively as part of classroom instruction
- To interact positively with colleagues in creating and imparting interdisciplinary units of study
- To accompany all Lower School students to and from their “homeroom”
- To fulfill responsibilities as assigned by the Lower School Head in regard to lunch and recess duty, car and bus dismissal
