The IDEAL School of Manhattan is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and creative college and postsecondary counselor and teacher of English (2 sections) for a full-time position starting in August 2021. IDEAL graduates attend a wide range of typical four-year colleges and postsecondary institutions that provide supported programs, including IDEAL’s own Next Steps 18-21 Transition Program. IDEAL’s powerful mission of inclusion and small, supportive High School environment provides an opportunity for the right candidate who is willing to expand the students they serve to include those who are accepted to and attend a range of colleges and postsecondary institutions reflecting their unique talents and paths.
The College and Postsecondary Counselor will be responsible for:
Teaching two High School English courses
Counseling and supporting students and families through the entire college and postsecondary application process, from start to finish, beginning in Grade 10, and including financial aid applications
Planning and leading college and postsecondary information sessions for Grade 10 and 11 students and their families
Coordinating local college or postsecondary visits for student groups
Scheduling admissions representatives’ visits, in-person or remotely
Utilizing Scoir to generate reports and maintain up-to-date data on current and former student applications (both individual and aggregate), test scores, and other factors
Coordinating external testing (PSAT, SAT) including test scheduling and ordering, liaising with IDEAL’s SAT test prep vendor, and test administration
Overseeing the process to ensure students receive appropriate and required accommodations for testing
Writing the college counselor essays for all seniors
Overseeing faculty who are writing student college recommendations and providing training for faculty new to this process
Representing the school at relevant state and national workshops and conferences
Growing the school’s relationships with a range of colleges and postsecondary programs that embrace and support IDEAL’s full range of students

Proven success and experience in teaching English and counseling students in the college and postsecondary process
For those candidates who may have more experience with traditional four-year colleges, a willingness and ability to expand their understanding of the postsecondary process to include supported and inclusive programs
Ability to form strong and positive relationships with High School students, families, and colleagues
Experience with a college applications platform such as the Common App, Naviance, Scoir
An understanding of differentiation
The ability to collaborate as a part of a team
Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal
A desire to make a difference in the school--to contribute time and talent outside of the classroom to the growth of students and the school
Master’s degree in education, counseling, or a related field required
Three years’ experience in a college guidance capacity
Independent school experience is preferred but not essential
