Beacon Academy seeks to hire a dynamic and entrepreneurial upper school English teacher to join our experienced and innovative faculty for the 2021-2022 school year. Beacon’s English core program is student-centered and places student exploration and the steady mastery of skills at the heart of a holistic, Montessori-based learning experience that celebrates and honors self-expression, effective communication, and acuity in reading. Our English courses provide students with the skills and knowledge to interpret what they see, hear, read and feel. The candidate for this position should be prepared to balance International Baccalaureate Literature requirements with a Montessorian, student-centered approach to teaching literature and writing. This teacher will teach and explore the discipline of English and should be energized by course creation and development across periods, genres, themes, etc. This teacher should have experience setting standards and evaluating student writing, oral communication, and individual growth. In addition to an understanding and affinity for the developmental stages, passions, and energies inherent in the high school age group, acceptance of the value of diversity of ideas and approaches is fundamental for this position. Finally, coachability, flexibility, and a sense of humor are integral attributes sought for this position.
To develop and encourage critical thinkers who are able to communicate their ideas through the written word.

To support student learning and encourage students to feel confident in exploration, observation, intention, and reflection.
To develop students’ communication, analytical, and synthesis skills over the course of time.
To be aware of and coordinate teaching objectives, materials, methods, and means of assessment used within the department.
To be present and accessible to students and colleagues during school hours.
To communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress.
To provide ideas for agenda items for possible inclusion in faculty and department meetings.
To articulate the department's strategies in achieving the mission and goals of the school and work with colleagues to set departmental objectives, assessments, and policies accordingly.
To contribute to the preparation of the annual departmental budget for the purchase of additional texts, supplies, and equipment, and to administer the budget in cooperation with the department and the CFO.
To participate in ongoing professional development.
To collaborate effectively with colleagues, both within the English department and interdisciplinarily
To fulfill duties as assigned by the Head of School
A bachelor’s degree or higher, ideally in a related field.
Entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative work.
IB, Montessori, and/ or progressive education teaching experience.
Excellent communication skills, collaborative skills, attention to detail, and interest in innovative curriculum development.
A commitment to literature as a means of developing community, diversity, and inclusion.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the responsibilities, the employee is required to talk and hear and have close, distant, and peripheral vision.
The role requires standing, sitting, reaching, and light lifting.
Typical work hours are limited to Monday through Friday, but additional days/hours are required at times depending on the demands of the department and School events.
