Master Teacher

The Master Teacher (MT) at the N.E. Miles Early Childhood Development Center is a teaching professional in a program that demonstrates best practices and leadership in the local and regional early childhood community. The MT (one of four at ECDC) is responsible for creating and maintaining the classroom environment, curriculum planning, teaching, and assessment of the children in the assigned class. The MT group also works with the program director on initiatives relative to the program mission and is accountable for meeting state licensing regulations and national accreditation standards through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The MT also works with professors/students from time to time on research projects. The MT develops constructive relationships with families and supervises graduate assistants, hourly teaching assistants, and practicum students.

Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field with 3 years of experience is required. Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field is preferred. Current South Carolina teacher certification (or equivalent in reciprocating state) is required. Successful prior experience teaching toddler, pre-school and/or kindergarten-aged children required. Experience with the Reggio Emilia approach and/or inquiry/project-based learning desired. The MT position requires co-teaching with Graduate students and Undergraduate students, so disposition towards and/or successful experience collaborating with other similarly-qualified professionals desired. The program does not use commercial curriculum products so initiative, creativity, and a reflective approach to teaching are highly desirable characteristics.
