Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a full time (1.0 FTE) high school History teacher. This appointment begins in mid to late August, 2021.
Responsibilities The History Department teacher, reporting to the History Department Head and the Upper School Director, will join a highly collaborative department with colleagues that are creative and constantly exploring best practices for inclusive and culturally responsive pedagogy. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
Teaching four sections of World History, United States History, and/or upper division electives to a diverse student body with varying experiences;
Providing academic support for students with different learning styles and strengths outside of class time (answering homework questions, providing extra writing help, etc.) as needed;
Actively collaborating and participating in the work of the History Department on innovative, inclusive, and equitable curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
Attending grade-level team and faculty meetings as scheduled;
Acting as an advisor for 8 to 10 high school students;
Actively participate in the life of the school community, assuming at least one additional out of the classroom duty, such as advising a student club, joining a standing committee, or coaching.
Requirements and Qualifications A successful candidate for this position will meet the following requirements and qualifications:
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
Prior experience working with a diverse student population and demonstrated equity and inclusion mindset.
A commitment to and proven experience incorporating diverse perspectives, voices, and viewpoints into the curriculum.
A bachelor’s degree in History or a closely related field;
Experience teaching History, preferably to high school students, and a passion for interacting with high school students in and outside of the classroom;
Experience teaching Psychology and/or other social science electives is an asset;
Excellent collaboration skills and a pitch-in, can-do attitude;
Proficiency in technology and digital teaching tools; and
Candidates must satisfactorily complete two nationwide criminal background checks.
