Lowell School, a progressive independent school in NW Washington, DC, is seeking a Middle School Language Arts Teacher.
Overview of Position
The Middle School Language Arts Teacher is a full-time position that supports the progressive integration of language arts and social studies content and skills. The position is responsible for teaching language arts and for planning collaboratively with her/his/their social studies grade-level partner. Each grade-level humanities pair seeks team teaching opportunities and works with grade-level teachers in other disciplines on integrated projects. The position is also responsible for serving as an advisor for a group of middle school students. Successful Lowell teachers are lifelong learners who are reflective about their practice, find ways to bring ‘real life’ into their classroom, and actively seek professional development and leadership opportunities.
Candidates must have experience teaching middle school language arts, including strong skills in teaching writing and literary analysis and in creating dynamic classrooms with high educational standards.
Candidates’ pedagogy should be student-centered, and they should be comfortable differentiating instruction.
Candidates should have a passion for working with middle schoolers and be able to inspire students and teachers alike.
Candidates should be able to work collaboratively, have excellent communication skills, and be willing to work closely with families.
Candidates should be inspired by Lowell’s mission and have a commitment to social justice and equity, and cultural competence.
A master’s degree in education with a focus on language arts and at least three years of successful experience as a teacher are preferred, but alternate pathways into the profession will be considered.
Experience with curriculum development, curriculum integration, and assessment strategies.
Experience with constructivist teaching/learning.
A collaborative spirit, and a ready sense of humor.
