Stevens Cooperative School is seeking a 6th-8th Grade Latin Teacher to teach three days a week, as well as serve as a Community Teacher for two days a week for the 2021-2022 school year. We are looking for candidates who bring creativity, excellent relationship skills and a collaborative approach to their craft. Our faculty models a spirit of collaboration and inquiry to inspire students to “explore, question and communicate in ways that will shape the future.” Candidates will be culturally competent with effective organizational and classroom management skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to develop interpersonal relationships with faculty, parents, and students. We are committed to ongoing curricular and pedagogical anti-racist work, and we seek a candidate who shares that commitment and who can contribute to our efforts. We search out opportunities for professional growth and encourage reflection on our own practices. Our ideal candidate has a classics background and can easily teach Latin has a Classics background and can use it to enrich students' introductory Latin experience with a broad range of culture topics and primary source texts in translation.. We are looking for someone who enjoys teaching Middle School students as young as 6th grade. We would be particularly eager to hear about any interest, background, or expertise in modern engagement with the classical world and gender studies and other interdisciplinary scholarship.
Familiarity with the reading method and Comprehensible Input. Stevens currently uses Suburani in grades 6-8.
Preparation and implementation of daily lessons
Delivery of assignments and timely evaluation of all relevant class work and student progress
Design and implementation of appropriate, authentic assessments and support of individual student learning styles
Timely and proactive communication with parents about student progress
Collaboration with other members of the faculty, administration and staff on experiential, interdisciplinary and community-based opportunities that add to the school community
Active participation in all faculty and staff meetings
Effective and timely communication with varied school constituencies in person, through email and phone
Support of school-wide initiatives through committee work, where appropriate
Continuous improvement and management of curriculum mapping
COMMUNITY TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide coverage for teachers who are absent
Implement lesson plans as provided
Maintain a safe and secure environment conducive to learning for children of different ages
Has a passion for teaching Latin and enjoys and understands young adolescents .
Training and relevant teaching experience at the middle school level
The ability to make the Latin language and Roman culture accessible to middle school students
Deep knowledge of classical mythology, Roman culture and history, and Latin roots
Demonstrates flexibility and resourcefulness and be motivated to grow and to collaborate with others
Exceptional writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
Involvement in ongoing professional development
Interacts effectively and sensitively with a diverse population of students, faculty and parent body.
Bachelor's degree in a related field, Masters preferred
Ability to create individual educational plans
Relevant classroom experience with similar age-group
Proficient with using technology (Google Suite and use of Smart Panels and Chromebooks
