| Derby Academy, a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 co-educational day school located in Hingham, Massachusetts, seeks a Primary & Lower School (PreK through Grade 3) Arts Teacher to work with our youngest students, teaching visual art beginning in August, 2021. Rooted in the school’s motto, “Improve Both Mind and Heart,” Derby’s Lower School program emphasizes a well-balanced education with challenging academics, enriching arts programs, team sports and physical education. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in art education, as well as a demonstrated ability to work with young students. The Art Teacher will teach all PreK through Grade 3 classes and assist with major school initiatives related to the Arts Program. The Art Teacher is expected to collaborate with colleagues at various grade levels and within the department effectively. An ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience teaching in an early childhood setting, as well as a strong visual arts background. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in arts education, excellent written and verbal communication skills, commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, ongoing engagement in professional development, and demonstrated experience working with young children is required. At least three years of previous teaching experience is preferred, though Massachusetts teacher certification is not required for consideration. The ideal candidate will: - Have a strong professional background in visual arts;
- Have experience working with young students and knowledge about early childhood development;
- Have enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to collaborate with colleagues both in the department and across disciplines;
- Provide activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, innovation, problem-solving, and the use of technology;
- Have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and the impact it has on the curriculum and the community;
- Create a supportive and caring classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another, through student-centered instruction, collaboration and authentic assessment;
- Communicate with families to provide timely and appropriate feedback regarding student progress;
- Possess a growth mindset when it comes to engaging with relevant and mission-driven professional learning for themselves.
