Responsible for maintaining up-to-date teaching techniques to provide students with a quality educational experience in a high school science class. This includes the development and execution of physics topics (electronics and cosmology) and chemistry. The curriculum should focus on inquiry-based experiences, multiple levels of material engagement and the use of scientific tools and technology. Science teachers report to their respective Principals and are overseen by the Science Department Chair. The Science Department overall is responsible for the education of students in grades 3 - 12.
Maintain up-to-date teaching techniques to provide students with a quality educational experience in a high school science class.
Teach one chemistry class (introductory level or advanced level) with labs. This includes weekly collaboration with the teacher of the other sections of this course.
Teaching one physics class (two semester-long course sequence, with topics focused around electronics and cosmology).
The curriculum should focus on inquiry-based experiences, multiple levels of material engagement and the use of scientific tools and technology.
Science teachers report to their respective Principals and are overseen by the Science Department Chair.
Engage collaboratively with other chemistry and physics teachers in the Science Department to ensure that curricula are developmentally appropriate and work synergistically with the high school scope and sequence.
Work in collaboration with their own faculty and interact productively with colleagues outside their faculty, other professionals, staff and administrators, and parents.
Work a 20 hour work week and the required number of days as stipulated in the collective bargaining agreement.
Perform in accordance with the terms and conditions of the bargaining agreement between the University of Chicago and the Faculty Association.
Anticipated start date for this position is 9/1/2021.
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, or a related field of science required.
Advanced degree in a field of science preferred.
At least three years of experience teaching physics or chemistry required, preferably at the high school level.
Background in developing curriculum and teaching advanced classes is strongly preferred.
Adept at working with a wide range of students with diverse backgrounds such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, learning abilities, class, language, and nationality.
Comfort level teaching physics or chemistry required.
Skillful using and preparing lab materials and knowledge of safety protocols for chemical use.
