Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades Pre-Kindergarten (including 2 year olds) through 12. The school has a current enrollment of approximately 800 students and 165 employees located on two campuses in Suffolk, Virginia. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.
This individual will be responsible for teaching and coordinating all language lessons for the Lower Schools at the Main and Harbour View campuses. This will include exposing the students to a variety of cultures and languages. The Lower School Language teacher will have significant latitude to shape the program in concert with the school’s mission. This individual will be expected to hold the highest standards of educational professionalism while engaging students in the cultural and language curriculum. This individual should be able to work in a collaborative atmosphere, while continuing to advance the current language program, and support all other programs of the school.
We seek candidates who possess the following education, experience, capabilities and qualities:
Demonstrate a willingness to engage students in developing introductory skills in speaking, reading and writing different languages for comprehension, communication, appreciation and interpretation.
Instruct language classes on a daily rotation at both the Main Campus and the Harbour View campuses.
Provide after school enrichment in language and culture, as needed.
Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences and lead to the development of critical skills.
Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs.
Lead students to develop critical thinking and process skills.
Familiarize students to the culture and history of the different speaking cultures around the
Possess specific knowledge of the structure and content of a variety of languages including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
Work closely with classroom teachers to provide interdisciplinary opportunities whenever possible and to select programs which are curricular related.
Work with both Heads of Lower School to order all supplies, materials, and equipment necessary for language and culture
Maintain open communication with parents, students, division heads and teachers.
Utilize technology to facilitate instruction and enhance learning.
Participate in divisional and whole school meetings and professional development activities.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Heads of Lower School at the Main and Harbour View campuses.
Support the mission and philosophy of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
Perform other duties as requested by the Heads.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Elementary Education with experience in different languages
Current teaching certification in the state of Virginia required.
Technology proficiency is essential including use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and the use of SMART Boards and digital projectors preferably in an Apple environment. Proficiency with Google’s G Suite for Education and Blackbaud preferred.
Familiarity with teaching and possesses a student centered outlook.
Ability to teach both in-person and virtually, as needed.
Understanding of the needs of students in a challenging academic independent school environment.
Ability to collaborate effectively with other math teachers and ensure cohesion of the program across divisions.
Understands the mission of the school and the need to focus on the education of the whole child.
Takes initiative and is self-motivated.
Values parents as a vital resource in educating a child.
Represents the school positively in the community.
Excellent organizational skills and communication skills, both written and oral.
Understands the critical nature of building positive working relationships with students, parents and colleagues.
Work collaboratively not only with teachers within the department but also school-wide.
